Hi, if you're looking for the short answer, YES.
But the real answer is much more complex.
The thing is, the Director is essentially a combination of two 800 series expansion boards (a digital input board and an analog output board).
They used a slightly less complex DAC for it than for 800 series. While this is worse, it's better because they had to ditch the op amp at the output (to save power, as the limit is only 2.5 watts). So, the Director DAC has a high output of 2V RMS by default, meaning it doesn't need an op amp, and the analog stage offers a very clean direct output after the DAC and a simple first-order low-pass filter (bypass capacitors).
I think at some point they feared that this device would become too much of a competitor to the G series and the 800 reference (why buy those boxes when you can get the same thing, even better, and for less).
So, they used the worst connector they could come up with – the mini jack for spdif... There are no any good digital cables with this type of plugs. And the included power supply is noisier than my iPhone charger. The goal was to create a device that would be in the market (not too good and not too bad). And they succeeded.
This modification uses the original director.
It has a splitted and separate power supply, and all connections are minimized to use the shortest signal and power path possible. Only the best suitable wiring, connectors, components, and soldering are used. And yes, it uses a special audiophile power supply with ultra-low noise.
I use high-quality connections, and I can only say that the bottleneck in my system right now is the connections, not the devices.

We can buy a linear power supply for the Director for a couple of hundred quid or less, probably better off buying one of these for an unmodified director and waiting for a bargain on ebay.

I have 2 Directors, one cost just £120, the seller even included some free sweets
Have tested one back to back with a 861 v4 and found the director ok, but lacking vs the 861 and quite bright, it needs flatter sounding RCA cables to tame the treble somewhat, but still wouldn't sell them, for the money it's a good dac, ok for music but sound really nice for movies, very similar to the 861.
Ideal for a 2nd or 3rd system.

Obviously they are 24bit / 192k unlike many Meridian products, making them slightly smoother to listen to.
Was going to use one in the car via a tablet, but never got around to it, maybe one day.
Not sure i'd buy this one on ebay.
