Hello all,

I just got rid of my projector and bought a 98" TV instead. Since UHD722 is quite outdated, is there a 4K/8K switch/splitter you recommend to be used with my system. We watch movies from Oppo Blu-Ray, Apple TV 4K... No game consoles.

Price preferably less than 1000 eur and hopefully one which is easy to use and changes source when changed from Meridian remote.

All help greatly appreciated.

FWIW, the current version of the UHD722 the so called "R" variant is NOT outdated as far as movies and content goes. It now passes Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and 4K 60fps. It's basically future proofed now for content.

Unless you're gaming, you won't have a need for 4K above 60fps IMHO. 8K content is a LONG way off and I'll bet good money that 4K UHD is not only the last ever physical format we'll get, but will remain the streaming standard for the next decade or more.

So unless you need gaming and want 8K output, Samsung is really the only game in town there pushing 8K displays, then you'll have to go for something like an HDFury Vroom (also does LLDV->HDR for Samsungs), otherwise a new 722 is the way to go.

I use my 722s with an Apple TV, UHD Blu-ray players and Zidoo boxes and they are just perfect. Especially for integration with a Meridian Pre-Pro, anything from the 568.2mm to the G65, has 1 click video/audio source switching like any AVR would do, except the sound quality is better with MHR and the video purity is excellent with no scaling and pure passthrough to the display.

The 722 also pre-decodes MPEG and AAC bitstreams, which no AVR can do other than 100V Japanese domestic market units which can come in handy with AAC being used by some VOD services. Not even a Trinnov can pass an AAC 5.1/7.1 signal or decode an old MPEG Multichannel PAL DVD, this is an exclusive to Meridian function on their HDMI processors.

Current spec HDMI boards are getting quite scarce, there is a global shortage of them so I'd pick up a new 722 before Meridian runs out of stock of the new boards if you plan on staying within the M pre-pro based system ecosystem for the foreseeable future.

Muridio have a handy chart. But basically HDMI 2.1 introduced a new format, FRL. FRL Data Rate Chart

The VRRoom supports HDMI 2.1, and so FRL, hence the advantage.

However, as pointed out before, there aren’t 8K sources.
So all you need to worry about is 4K for movies and rely on the manufacturer smarts to upscale the 4K signal to 8K that the panel supports.
Which will only really be of benefit on the really big screens, say 77” and above.
