Here in the UK, health messages advise Men over 60 to seek screening for Bowel and Prostate issues. I was therefore surprised to be invited for a free screening for
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm for Men over 65. I had not previously been aware of AAA.
Fortunately, following my scan, I’m well within the limits of concern for this purely Male only issue (that normally takes years to develop), but I am alarmed that other Male family members older than me have not been similarly invited for such screening when they had reached 65 - even though such screening has been available since 2006.
Without being alarmist AAA is potentially a silent killer that is mainly symptom-free. Screening is a peripatetic outreach service that operates out of major hospitals. It’s a simple pain-free scan of your Abdomen that only takes 20 minutes to complete.
So, to ensure many audio years ahead of you, and you’re over 65, my advice is to ask your medical practitioner about having an AAA scan.
