The remote could be for the short-lived 586 DVD player. As it was based on Toshiba electronics, it would make sense.
To control multiple devices just requires them to be linked together using comms cables, put the lot into standby, and press CLEAR on the remote. This should select one as the controller (typically the surround processor) and then you can use FN + command key to operate the selected device - normal key presses will operate the master unit.
