Generally this is true for a big file server. However, if you only had 200 CDs then the Intel 80G X-25M is now just $225 and so with a fanless Atom based NAS can make a completely silent solution. Intel quote writing 20G a day for 5 years before you start to get write failures, so for rips should not be an issue since you'll just fill the drive and then stop writing. For larger collections, it's not cost effective yet.
