Why is Oppo to HD621 a problem?

Jim, I am not denying to help at all with this, but you have to understand my position here
I mod these players and then test, everything goes well I then ship, I have done this on quite a few occasions with the Oppo + SPDIF now, I always use the same media to test and the results are all the same, all customers receive the same exact player that you did and all of them report perfect results that coincide with the same testing results that I find on each and every player
your player has been here twice and went thru my testing twice, I usually use that Tomb Raider BD for one and I use a Al Di Meola "Flesh on Flesh" SACD for another, I sometimes use that Oppo test disc as well(in your case I didn't), I use these because I know them very well and know what to listen for, if these two/three things work perfectly in my testing and everything goes well I consider it case closed and ship and in your case I have done this twice
what I am saying is that there is no way for the mod to work with some stuff and not others, it doesn't work that way, the problem is with the Oppo and most likely its firmware
what I want you to do is send the player back to me for a 3rd checkout(you have my address), I will use the Oppo test disc and record the results as a video to prove my point that this is a working player, I will also use a updated board from Shawn
things simply work when they leave me, if they didn't I wouldn't be in business long, I get reports all the time that this or that isn't working, around 3 out of 500 so far has been something other than user error(sorry KJ, sadly that includes you)
thanks Jim and I apologize for your issues

Hi Jim,
"So with these sample codecs, there is sound distortion and inversion. "
It isn't from the codec itself, just the level of the signal within it.
Do you have the Sheffield 'My Disc' by any chance? It has tracks which would help to determine if this is the clipping issue from the chips being in the wrong format.
If so play track 7 which is a 1kHz test tone recorded at -20dB. It should be clean and sound fine.
Then play track 8 which is a 1kHz test tone recorded at 0dBFS. If this is the wrong format issue this will sound nasty.
The other test that lets you hear this pretty easily is the Stereophile Test CD 2. The channel ID track. The guitar is very close to 0dBFS and doesn't sound right if it is clipping. The channels will also be inverted side to side.
Shawn

I think I'll pass on a modded BDP-83. thanks for the information, most on this forum must have thought along the same lines , my interest list from the forum had over 50 names, about 8 orders received total from this forum, not counting the 4 early guys (which 2 are currently having issues, Jim and KJ)

Gary, here`s a modded proposal that includes a generous offer of Shawn to look at and repair his board if repair is needed. The idea was further developed in a conversation with KSwanson who has your modded 4xSPDIF Oppo.
1. I will ship the Oppo out tomorrow to Shawn.
2. I`ll include a couple of CDs that have failed to play plus your Bluray Laura Croft test disk
3. On arrival (est July 23) and at his convenience, Shawn will confirm that the Oppo works as Gary claims, or it fails as I've experienced
5. If it passes this test, we three will talk (probably after July 29) to determine why it plays at his place and yours but not mine and we`ll decide the next step
6. If it fails, Shawn will mod the transceiver board and retest
7. If it passes, he`ll ship it back to me with the test cds
8. If it fails, he will ship it to you with the test cds for further testing and repairs.
At all points you retain accountability for service of the Oppo under your published agreement with HHers where you said you`ll cover us for 6 months or up to twelve. It`s important to me that you agree to this future responsibility, which is yours today, so that Shawn assumes no future responsibility in this to you or me for his inspection and potential repair of his board.
9. If you ship to me following step 8 and it does not plug and play correctly, then you`ll refund my payment in full without further discussion.
The expectation, I think by all of us, is that the fault is fixed at step 6, the box comes back to me at step 7 and I can do the listening tests with modded Oppo into Meridian`s 861/DSPs that we anticipated from the beginning.
I need your OK by tomorrow afternoon so I can get it to UPS. Otherwise, I`m away for 10 days. It will be good to put this behind us.
Let me know if you agree. Thanks JimK

Jim, no problem at all, sounds fine with me
when I said I would take care of folks up to 6 months or so, I meant that exactly, if that means replacement players even, refunds are not part of that service though
hopefully it is the transceiver board however I have my doubts because the players are testing just fine here
thanks Jim

Not that you cared, I haven't seen any PM to discuss it. For me 'take it or leave it' offers always default to 'leave it'.
