Right, tried it but still have static throughout. Thanks

Does this unit auto switch between 120v in the USA and 220V in the U.K.

If so what did Gary test it on 120v or 220v?

Just a thought that something might be misbehaving on 220V.

I believe the 861/G68 accepts MHR or non MHR automatically. You can tell devices to optionally output MHR but not optionally accept it.

George: Don't think it auto switches. There's a new handwritten warning on the back that says 120V. I don't know what testing Gary has done.

Shawn: Just completed tests without the 861. Configured the Left 5200 as master, right 5200 as slave. Ran interconnect from Oppo1 (then 2 and 3) to the left speaker.

Results thru 3 trials of Bluray Concert in Berlin were static on Oppo 1 and Oppo2. No static heard on Oppo 3 which is the surrounds. This is consistent with testing I did back in June before sending it back to Gary.

To clarify,I sequenced between Oppo 1, 2, and 3, then powered the Oppo down Did this 3 times, result didn't change.

Only surprise to me in this test was Speaker display said PCM48k and no yellow light, so 5200 did not upsample. Should it work this way?

When a speaker internally upsamples the yellow light does not come on.

Yellow light means it's receiving 88K or 96K.

Huh?

Surely if the speaker was receiving 88k or 96k then the input would say so and not say pcm48k?

His display said 48K, Yellow light will not come on and speaker will upsample.

If he did receive 88K or 96K the yellow light would come on and the speaker would not upsample.

Yellow light just indicates he is receiving high-res. Speaker does not indicate if it's upsampling. But you can assume if the yellow light is off that it is upsampling.

James, have you tried testing the player out on a regular receiver/pre-amp via single coaxial audio connection for each output?, again check the following as you connect up and before you play:

downmix to 7.1
all speakers to ON
all speakers to large
all speakers to 0db
all speakers to 10ft
dynamic range OFF

my testing is done isolated with these settings, I very carefully and thoroughly listen to all 4 outputs this way, the player was perfect both times I shipped

static only happened when the analog audio setup was messed up

please continue to let us know James, this is the funkiest thing I have seen in a long time

thanks and sorry for your problems getting this going

Gary, I did a test like this directly into the Meridian speaker, bypassing the 861. See the post about four back for those results. Tonight, I'll run it thru a JVC receiver into passive speakers.

I'm pretty sure the down mix is set to 5.1. Should it be 7.1 as you spec'd here? Thoght someone earlier had said 5.1, not sure. I'll try both.

Also for info, there was a Bluray Laura Croft Tomb Raider disk in the Oppo drawer when it came back. I played it for a minute or two while getting set up and don't recall hearing static. Could movie audio tracks behave differently than concerts? The static is most pronounced with high energy, female vocal and orchestral passages.

I'm hoping we'll find a setting and explanation that makes the difference.

I will back Jim up that his DSP Speaker *IS* like another receiver. By his posts he was extremely thorough in testing every conceivable way. If one Oppo output works on his 861 or his DSP speakers they should all work. It certainly seems to be pointing at a problem with the Oppo.

Why can't it be the problem Shawn described? Where one output (output 3) did reset correctly but two others (output 1, 2) did not.

With his second set of tests it might be. His first set of tests didn't make sense as the output that was bad changed based on what he was playing. That wouldn't be the problem I suggested. The broken/working output would be consistent for all material no mater what he played. It might only vary on power cycles.

Shawn and George, I did those test over several hours on Saturday. There were power ups and downs but I didn't know then that it made a difference and should be documented. I'm going to do the tests Gary suggested using JVC receiver into passive speakers and will cycle on and off and switch in Bluray and SACD.That should settle it; I want to eliminate the Meridian settings as an issue so Gary can focus back on either the Oppo or his mods...later and thanks...more than you'll ever know! Jim,

When you power cycle the Oppo also unplug it from the wall. That way we know the board is seeing a power down state. Some equipment leaves 5v power supplies up and running when in standby so depending upon where the power is tapped into for the board the board may not see a power cycle.
