After ripping my CD collection, and placing them in storage alongside my LP's, I picked-up a long-forgotten album - 'Instructions for Angels' by David Bedford.

If you like Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield plays on this album), you'll appreciate the developing themes on Instructions for Angels.

I used to frequently play this UHJ encoded disc via my Sansui Quadraphonic system in the 1970's.

I was surprised to discover this album is now available on CD (which I subsequently purchased) on Amazon.

The disc notes on the CD don't mention the UHJ encoding, but if it was inherent in the original recording I feel certain that it is on this CD.

I have just had a nice music listening experience. Two SACDs, the first being Roxy Music's Avalon. Sounds really smooth in 5.1, highly recommended.

The second SACD was Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. Again another superb 5.1 mix, turn it up loud and you really get carried away...

At least on price this must be worth a look if you are SACD capable.

King Crimson's Heavy Construkction box set is the most incredible music ever.

I have recently purchased, and would recommend, the Diana Krall (SACD) 'The Girl in the Other Room'.

It is an excellently engineered recording, that envelops you in the centre of the performance.

Regarding King Crimson , Steven Wilson ( of Porcupine Tree ) is remixing their back catalogue for CD/DVD-A which should be interesting .

For anyone who likes the down'n'dirty Louisiana sound , the soundtrack to the series ' True Blood ' is a real grower .

The mark of a good improvement to the HiFi is the need to rediscover so much stuff. These are the CDs that I've found so far which sound gorgeous on my setup.

The Church - Starfish

Although their earlier albums sounded like The Byrd's sound brought into the 80s, this album sees a move away from the jangle-pop and into more adventurous soundscapes. Lots of strong melodies and lots of interesting stuff going on behind the harmonies and melodies.



Cluster and Eno

Proof if needed that ambient doesn't have to be 20 minute slabs of go-nowhere. One of their better recorded efforts using lots of electric as well as electronic instruments to produce a load of moods captured in 5 minute chunks. Holger Czukay and Asmus Tietchens guest.



Can - Soundtracks

Recorded live to 2-track with very little in the way of overdubs. Quite an open airy sound with some beautiful ballads ("She Brings the Rain") as well as all-out guitar freakoutery and the relentless drumming of Jaki Liebezeit of "Mother Sky".

Another vote for the Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scotts show . I got it on BD and its really good . The young australian girl bass player Tal Wilkenfeld who has accompanied JB on several shows recently ( such as Eric Clapton's 2nd ' Crossroads' show ) is particularly outstanding and she 's only 22 !


The intimate venue really makes it ,
