I may be completely off but just from reading around the subject there seems to be no great mystery. Starting with 44.1KHz data, you upsample to 88.2KHz (using whatever algorithm you choose, I happen to like SRC) and then immediately implement your apodising filter with a corner frequency of 22.05KHz. Your DAC could then plausibly implement any kind of digital reconstruction filter, so long as the corner frequency was higher than that of the apodising filter, with greatly reduced pre-echo. You would therefore only need one apodising filter in the chain. It would best be placed in the ADC used to master the recording, which tallies with what other, smarter, people have suggested. Eliminating pre-echo in the anti-aliasing filter would have benefits from end to end of the signal chain.
Where you hit a brick wall is in the DSP speakers. Since each speaker contains at least two DACs and lots of filters, you would possibly want to disable that first apodising filter in the chain and use two/three, one per frequency band. Theoretically you could implement a NTM filter with fewer time domain problems than current implementations.

Getting back to Lotus and Ferrari- actually a great example to consider. Lotus was actually the pioneer- they pioneered the mid engine layout. Ferrari would resist all kinds of new technology- allowing others to evolve them and then when they were better understood he would employ them for more racing success. Which way is the best? I donno.
