Just out of curiosity, has anyone here tried playing a SACD on the Oppo BDP-83? Tried one for the first time via the IA45 MCH analog input on my 861 and I am getting a periodic soft popping sound through the front speakers. CD is fine, as is Bluray.

Simon, did you get the popping sound on SACD with an HDMI connection?

TIA.

Not Simon but I get it from time to time on the HDMI connection.

I currently have no ability to run HDMI into my 861 as I'm a hold-out for the HD621. Need to play around with this a bit more and try a bunch more of my SACDs.

Kal - Have you used your BDP-83 to play SACD via its analog output into your 861? If so, I assume you did not hear the kind of soft popping sounds that I am getting?

just want to let everyone know that this is a fully modified unit from me, digital transport and SPDIF

I informed Simon that in my opinion his setup is so revealing that he is hearing source flaws in the media, but he informs me that checking the timestamp of the pops and rewinding and replaying doesn't repeat

every piece of media I own has faint pops and clicks that are audible due to what amazing audio we are getting these days, they are however confirmed to be repeatable in my case because they happen at the same timestamp 100% of the time

the faint pops seems to be showing up on all outputs on the Oppo

I will put a word into Oppo to look into this, it may be small errors or something in the decoding, nothing major at all

thanks

I've seen posts about that on unmodified players on AVS-forum as well:

Yes, this is exactly what I am experiencing. I had never bothered to try SACD on my Oppo until after Gary did his mod for me, but the fact that I hear pops/small dropouts on SACD on BOTH the 3xSPDIf output and on the analog output suggests it is a problem with the Oppo not the mods. These pops are pretty subtle BTW.

The good news is that Bluray sounds awesome - never better - thank you, Gary! The bad news is that, at least for now, the Oppo is inferior on SACD to my previous reference, a DVDUpgrades-modified Denon.

Wonder why the early beta testers didn't catch (hear) this? Hope Gary can get an explanation for us from Oppo. JimK

Don't know. I was in the first EAP round, but never tested SACD until now (bad, evil zoot!). Perhaps this is an intermittant problem, quite subtle and therefore difficult to hear, or maybe it is something about the interaction with 861 (or just my 861)? Or perhaps it just reflects how irrelevent SACD is rapidly becomming.

I'd be quite curious to know whether any other BDP-83 owners who run a Meridan 861 are hearing pops/dropouts with SACD?

I can play SACD's through PS3 and Clux into G68 and there are NO "soft pops".
