Paul, if you have the HD621 you don't need the SPDIF mod, so in your case the straight digital transport ed would work just fine

as usual, I have had a few people nitpicking things with the views inside the player, I must remind everyone that this is my fully modified prototype, so things are not final or complete, I just wanted to let everyone see what was going on inside the units, this is really close but not 100% exactly what will be shipping out

one concern was the wiring used from the clock add-on to the main board for example

What digital signal resolutions (bits/kHz) is the modified Oppo sending out via the 4x SPDIF lines? Are all resolutions from the source materials passed 'native' without any modification? What are the limits?

Roger, all resolutions/source material is untouched, no conversions even possible(which is a good thing for vast majority of folks), so your gear needs to take 192khz if that is the source, for example

a@a, You mean hook stock Oppo with normal old single coax/toslink DD/DTS lossy to G91 yes.

For Lossless/Hires I don't belive so oopo mod or no mod with G91. Need 568.2, G68, G61, C61 or 861V4 for highres. You could get 2-channal high-res into G91 from a modded Oppo. But not 6 channel.

There is very little point in going through G91 in my opinion because all it will do is allow G68 to upsample. But you might as well let G68 decode and let 5200's upsample.

You might just sit tight and wait for a few folks to compare HD621 vs modded 4xSPDIF. Problem is Gary's power buy may be over by the time a few folks comparing HD621 and SPDIF direct get their modded oppos and do some tedious testing. Also Meridian may release apodized upsampler intoi G68 which puts a twist on choices.

It's a long time religious debate if power supply/clock upgrades are "worth it". You'll allways get one crowd that says yes, another that says it's nonsense and a 3rd that says it can't hurt so why not.

Sorry, Gary, now I am really confused. When I tried to find out what signal resolution a G68 can handle (I do not have such info from Meridian at this time), CRION (Post #93614) reported that the G68 CANNOT handle 24-bit/192 kHz or 24-bit/178 kHz. So do I NEED to put an HD621 between the Oppo/modded and the G68 to process the signal from the Oppo down to 24-bit/96 kHz for the G68 to take it?

Correct. SPDIF cannot handle 176/192kHz. With the modded Oppo you will need to constrain it to sending max 96kHz PCM with an internal setting, assuming this exists.

EDIT: What does the Oppo send over HDMI (and therefore the tapped outputs) if it is connected to a display device which does not have multi-channel audio EDID (most of them)?

Also, the 96kHz limiter (p55 in the manual: http://www.oppodigital.com/Download/BDP83/BDP-83_English_Manual.pdf) only applies to the regular SPDIF output.
