Gary,

From your testing have you found any material benefits by using the Oppo with a video processor/scaler (eg an Iscan VP30 or VP50) or does the Oppo do a good job on its own?

I've always wondered about a scaler (probably nothing more than the VP30 for cost reasons) but wonder if it would be money better spent elsewhere in the system, particularly if the Oppo makes a good fist of it. My plasma is also only 1080i.

Thanks.

Hi Gary

I have just noted your comment about 220 Volt. In Australia we have 240 Volt +- 10%.I know that might sound strange but that's the standard here. Can the modified unit accommodate this?

The Oppo has about the same scaling hardware as a VP30...

I actually do like to use the Oppo on source direct with a good scaler, like the VP50pro

but the scaler brings so much more to the table for your entire system

the Oppo is very good on its own though

thanks

Gary, could you summarise how SACD will work with the player in a Meridian system? Are there SACD benefits with the player as it's one of the things I was holding off until I understood.

With a Meridian system you set the Oppo to decode the SACD/DSD to PCM. This is then usually sent over HDMI, but on a modified Oppo over the three coax to Meridian's (digital) input.

Thanks Tommy, that's what I had hoped. The combination of Bluray and SACD makes this a much better proposition than SACD alone.

Be carefull with SACD
Looking at the homepage:
http://www.custom-ht.com/oppo.html
Reading the preliminary specs
....
-source direct 1080p/24 4:2:2 Blu-Ray output via HDMI (as close to HD-SDI quality possible)
-source direct output of Blu-Ray audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD/DTS Master/LPCM via HDMI 1.3
-source direct 480i/576i 4:2:2 SD DVD output via HDMI (as close to SDI quality possible)
-source direct SACD as DSD via HDMI output
-source direct DVD-Audio as High frequency LPCM
-high-end digital CD audio transport
...

That means DSD not PCM output, just noise or nothing you will hear
