Frank's point is interesting. Since M processors handle clocking/jitter downstream, the basic Oppo might be all you'd need in an M system. But I'm in for all the mods because I'd hate to wonder "what if."

DVD-A is already provisionally available with the latest firmwares, though it's still buggy. Oppo'll get there eventually, I'm sure.

the performance of the Oppo is all out there on AVS, near 500 players are out and about, along with a thread that is out of control in length

all I have out there at this moment is one player, I would love for another member or 2 to have one and comment before we start but I don't know if that is possible, JSSJ was it and we appreciate his comments very much

thanks

my first post concerning this is back on page 9.

So I've had my modded Oppo BDP-83 for about 10 days now... I'm extremely pleased with the performance. I had (it's been sold) a McCormack UPD-1 for my SACD player (hooked into my G68 via the 5.1 analog inputs)... the modded BDP-83 is a far superior solution... you just can't beat a direct digital spigot. Multi-channel DVD-A via the BDP-83 matches the G98... it's really tough to hear any difference (of course with multi-channel there is so much going on it's tough to pick out any subtle differences). I also set up a 2 channel test running with the G98 in 'direct' mode to totally eliminate any processing. I chose Eric Clapton's 'Unplugged'. Unfortunately I don't have 2 copies of that CD (or any for that matter), so I wasn't able to do a true A/B comparison. I went back and forth trying to focus on his voice in one comparison, the guitar in the next, the base line, etc... there are some differences, but I was unable to pick a winner... they both sounded great. I also compared it against the 2 channel analog (the higher quality DAC) from the Oppo... no comparison... the Oppo analog section isn't bad, but it's no match for the digital spigot direct to the G98's analog section.

The only problem I've run into is with 192khz sources... the Oppo has a menu item to limit the PCM rate, but it only applies to the standard S/PDIF port. The G68 will not handle anything above 96khz, so the only avenue for 192khz is through the analog path. Don't know if Gary can get Oppo to change this behavior (i.e. PCM rate limit not applying to the path Gary is tapping)... here's hoping.

I am working on this as we speak, hope to have news for you soon, I don't even have any 192khz material here to test, but I will get some, hopefully some good news to follow

thanks

DVD-A support is there, just not complete (i.e. some discs play fine, some have navigation issues, some won't load)... about half of my discs played fine with the initial firmware... since then there have been 2 firmware upgrades... I need to go back through my DVD-A's and see how much progress has been made. The latest firmware did enable a new menu item for controlling DVD-A/DVD priority which wasn't there before, so it seems likely to be a supported feature at release (pure speculation on my part).

ok, I am getting a few requests for some more real world usage and comments(not that yours are not appreciated jssj)

so I am going to offer right now 2 units for a total of 3 early samples, the first two people that post and say they want them they are theirs, there is only one catch

no region free and no HD-SDI, these 2 mods are pretty much ready, but I want to make sure that they are 100%, so I can't offer them right now, when the powerbuy starts they will be ready

Meridian, digital transport ed and ultimate analog audio edition are ready to go and available on this, I would prefer the 2 units to be digital transport ed with Meridian SPDIF as that seems to be the most popular usage wanted here

lastly, I only request that the 2 buyers to comment plenty on the mods on the forums

anyone from anywhere in the world can buy, but without region free being offered it will probably be 2 US guys that want them, sorry overseas guys, you are welcome to try and get in on this though

first 2 posts get in and I will PM those members the paypal payment info and get their orders started

hopefully this will give plenty of feedback on the forums and answer almost anyones questions or reservations they may have about purchasing or not

thanks, appreciate it very much

Try setting the video output to 480i/p and see what happens. On the 980 with my mod that will force the Oppo to downsample >=96kHz to 48kHz.

I'm totally down with this, but do have two questions first (you can PM me if necessary):

1. Can the region-free be added afterwards? Or, more precisely, what is the probability that the region-free mod will eventually exist, and can it then be added at a later date?

2. What is the cost for these two guinea pigs?

Also, a final note: you may or may not be interested in my feedback (which I will be very happy to provide, copiously) as I currently run a Lyngdorf TDAI2200 integrated. I can thus report on up to 24/192 playback (the Lyngdorf decimates to 24/96 for RoomPerfect calculations, but it can accept 24/192), but not multichannel and unfortunately I can't help with Meridian equipment.

Best,
KJ

KJ, region free can be done afterwards at later date, no problem

probability is 99% on region free, it will be available at powerbuy launch

would you want the digital transport ed with or without 4x SPDIF?

price will be pretty decent for these 2 early buyers wink

thanks KJ
