I have NOT been able to get the SA 8300 --> RadianceXE --> HD621 --> Meridian 861 to produce 6 channels of audio; that is:
a) The SA 8300 is set to a DD 5.1 channel
b) The Meridian 861 shows Movie2 96kHz which means that it is receiving 2 channels of audio rather than 5.1 channels of audio
c) When I set the Radiance's "INPUT AUDIO EDID" to DD 5.1 44 kHz, DD 5.1 48 kHz and DD 5.1 96 kHz I get nothing but static.
The Question: Befor concluding that the problem is one or more of the RadianceXE or HD621 can someone please tell me whether or not:
i) The SA 8300's HDMI output passes 5.1 or, for some strange reason, downmixes the 5.1 to 2.0
ii) Those with an identical / simialr setup can shed any light on the problem.
Appreciate the assistance. Joel, I had the very same problem with a TIVO box--only two channels and when I set the EDID to DD5.1 I got screeching. My only solution was to put the TIVO directly into the HD621 and now it works fine. It seems apparent that there is a problem between the Radiance and the HD621. The folks at Lumagen are aware of it but they need to get a HD621 to test before they can fix it (not that it is necessarily a problem with the Radiance but, even if it is a problem with the HD621 they thought that they might find a workaround). I was not willing to do without mine for the week or so that it might take. I hope they manage to get one from a dealer or from Meridian. In the meantime, like I said, I gave up and now run my sources directly to the HD621 (except for my music server which only has coax out--so I have to do a loop between the Radiance and the HD621). IIRC someone else reported the lack of DD5.1 with a Sky box, a Radiance, and the HD621 as well.

I can see where your problem lies. You don't have video switching in your G68 and you have all sources coming through the HD621 via HDMI as either video plus audio or audio only. The only input selections on the HD621 are H1 to H6 and "Last Valid". This is keeping video and audio coupled together rather than giving the flexibility to switch them independently by splitting the input selections into video and audio like the 861 and other processors with video switching capability.
Sorry to say unless someone else can offer an alternative solution to me it looks like the only solution is to get M to write this capability into the next firmware upgrade for the HD621.
Cheers,
Steve Yes I already submitted my mconfig to my dealer who sent it to the UK to see if they can figure a way to do it. Also I suggested to the dealer/Meridian that they include separate video and audio source assignments in the next version of the mconfig/HD621 firmware. I think they sold a lot of the 68Js so maybe there is a chance they will respond..... I think another possibility is to add yet another HDMI switcher into my system but I'd really rather avoid that complication. Thanks.

Does anyone know if you can get HD621 audio (input) status from RS232? There must be a diagnostic in there somewhere.

Don't know for sure but from Meridian site: "The RS232 interface for the HD621 can be operated from any terminal which operates at 9600 baud with 1 start bit, 1 stop bit and no parity. Commands take the form of 2 ASCII characters, in some cases followed by a signed argument (‘nn` below). All characters are echoed by the processor." So, perhaps the echo will provide the information you seek. I think you would have to have a remote with a two-way script. It would be interesting to be able to see what the HD621 receives as opposed to what it outputs and you would think that M would make that possible.

It's not something that is likely to be "on" by default, though it would be interesting to see if it puts out any status messages.

Lumagen RadianceXE and Meridian HD621 Configuration/Setup Issues
First Setup:
-- HDMI sources are a Scientific Atlantic SA 8000 HDPVR and a Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-Ray
-- Audio connections: Source --> RadianceXE --> Meridian HD621 --> Meridian 861
-- Video connections: Source --> RadianceXE --> Meridian HD621 --> Marantz VP-11S2
Second Test Results:
Scientific Atlantic: -- Selected a DD 5.1 channel, RadianceXE EDID to "DD 5.1 Ch", heard white noise
-- Selected a DD 5.1 channel, RadianceXE EDID to global, heard sound BUT, and this is the issue, it was downmixed as the Meridian 861 display read "Cable MHR Movie2 PLIIMovie" rather than "Cable AC3 3/2.1 48k"
-- Selected a DD 5.1 channel, connected cable box directly to the Meridian HD621 (i.e. bypasssed the RadianceXE) and received a DD 5.1 signal as the Meridian 861 display read "Cable AC3 3/2.1 48k"
Panansonic DMP-BD60 -- Ironman Blu-Ray, RadianceXE EDID set to Out2 (i.e. Meridian HD621 EDIDs, heard sound and the Meridian 861 read "DVD PCM Movies6 96K"
-- Ironman Blu-Ray, RadianceXE EDID set to "PCM 5.1 48Khz, heard no sound
-- Ironman Blu-Ray, RadianceXE EDID set to "PCM 5.1 96 Khz", heard sound and the Meridian 861 display read "DVD MHR Movies6 96K"
Third Problems: -- RadianceXE is not passing DD 5.1 bitstream signals
-- RadianceXE / Panasonic DMP-BD60, based on the confirmed fact that the subject Blu-Ray is encoded as 48 Khz, is not working properly because the RadianceXE's EDID setting of "PCM 5.1 48 Khz" should produce sound but does not meaning:
a) Something is causing the audio track to be upsampled meaning that I am not using the better / improved upsampling of the Meridian (i.e. apodizing); or
b) RadianceXE's EDID tables are not working and, what is listed as 96Khz is really 48 KHz
c) RadianceXE does not lock on consistently in that most of the time Iahve to toggle between inputs to get the sound.
d) Which is correct (i.e. PCM versus MHR in the following) and why is there a difference in that i) when I DO NOT force the RadianceXE EDID's to "PCM 5.1 96 KHz" I get "DVD PCM Movies6 96K" and ii) when I DO force the RadianceXE EDID's to "PCM 5.1 96 KHz" I get "DVD MHR Movies6 96K"
With that there is still some work to do with the RadianceXE's audio and EDID settings...
-- Meridian HD621 has a design flaw...the HDMI output will NOT drive a secondary dsiplay unless the G68/861 is on...this, for me, is a flaw as I use the HD621's output to drive a secondary / plasma display which means that Inow need to ensure that my 861 is on...
Fourth, Help
In any event, there are issues with the RadianceXE and HD621 but, help with respect to resolving any and all of the aboev would be helpful..
And, for those that own an G68/861 what is the proper interpretation of 96K "DVD MHR Movies6 96K"; that is
a) Does it mean that the 861 is recieving a 96KHz signal that has been upsampled;
b) Does it mean that the 861 is recieving a 48 KHz signal that is being upsampled; and
c) Why is there a K, which indicates upsampling, when the Lumagen's EDID suggest that the signal is already 96 KHz?
Very confused and looking for help...
Thanks in advance...

I control it via 232 but I would need to incorporate a script to get two-way communication. PS the 232 codes for the HD621 are posted on the Meridian site.

It's not something that is likely to be "on" by default, though it would be interesting to see if it puts out any status messages. Well I know that the M 232 codes all have echo on by default but I don't know if one of the "echos" provides the stream display for the incoming signal.

-- RadianceXE is not passing DD 5.1 bitstream signals
-- RadianceXE / Pansonic DMP-BD-60, based on my understanding that the Blu-Ray are encoded as 48 Khz, is not working properly meaning:
a) Something is causing the audio track to be upsampled meaning that I am not using the better / improved upsampling of the Meridian (i.e. apodizing); or
b) RadianceXE's EDID tables are not working and, what is listed as 96Khz is really 48 KHz
[NOTE: It would be good to confirm as to whether or not the Blu-Ray is actually encoded in 48 Khz or 96Khz] I checked this BR on my set up with an Oppo BDP83 which is configured to pass through audio LPCM. The stream is going through the HD621 before the Radiance. The stream display on my G68 is the same as what you saw. I did a google and it seems that the sample rate of the BRD is 48khz. Fourth, Help
And, for those that own an G68/861 what is the proper interpretation of 96K "DVD MHR Movies6 96K"; that is
a) Does it mean that the 861 is recieving a 96KHz signal that has been upsampled;
b) Does it mean that the 861 is recieving a 48 KHz signal that is being upsampled; and
c) Why is there a K, which indicates upsampling, when the Lumagen's EDID suggest that the signal is already 96 KHz?
Very confused and looking for help...
Thanks in advance... As I understand it, you are correct that the K means the processor is upsampling it so that would imply that the HD621 is receiving a 48khz signal and not upsampling it. That does seem odd and, since in my setup the signal is going from BRP to HD621, I think we can conclude it has nothing to do with the Radiance.

Jack:
I appreciate your response to the above but am unclear as to what you mean with respect to:
1. "The stream display on my G68 is the same as what you saw"...okay, you saw the same display as I was but what does it mean / how isit interpreted?
2. "I did a google and it seems that the sample rate of the BRD is 48khz"...see post 91252 of this thread which says that BD disks can be 48KHz and 96 KHz...would be great to find out exactly what my copy of Ironman is as it would add a lot of clarity.
3. "As I understand it, you are correct that the K means the processor is upsampling"...you everyone agrees with that...
"...so that would imply that the HD621 is receiving a 48khz signal and not upsampling it..."...do not agree with this as I can only get a signal from the disk with EDID set to 96KHz which, to m, means that the disk itself is 96KHz which then raises the issue -- what is doing the upsampling (i.e. HD621 or 861) and how is this possible as I did not know that 96 KHz could be upsampled to 192 KHz
Anyways, would be GREAT for someone to DEFINITELY assist/explain the whether in 96K the 96 is input signal or the output signal...
