Also , check which numbered outputs you are using from HD621

1/2 , 3/4 , 5/6 , 7/8

Sounds like a channel pair is not connected .

To confirm that my understanding is correct does this mean that apodizing / upsampling is limited to:

1. Anologue signals that are first convertedto digital signals; and

2. PCM / LPCM signals.

Yes, but you have a decoding Blu-Ray player and an 800 which decodes as well. It would only be DD bitstreams from other devices that you wouldn't get upsampling and apodizing with.

But, just to be clear, the digital signal from my SONOS, because it is not bitstream, would similarly get upsampled and apodized were I to send it through the Lumagen first...is this not the case?

Again, thanks so much...

Correct. Obviously, if and when the processors get apodizing, it would be best to feed your Sonos direct into your 861.

Ahhhh, things are never perfectly clear which means that one more follow up is needed....would it not be the case that even after the 861 gets apodizing capabilities that it *MAY* still be better to pass the signal through to the HD621 because the 861, based on my current (and potentially incorrect) understanding, would not be able to provide apodizing, DSPs and upsampling all atthe same time...in other words:

a) SONOS --> HD621 --> 861 would have the pros of apodizing and upsampling and the con of potentially higher jitter jitter; whereas

b) SONOS --> 861 (assuming the 861 has apodizing capabilities) would have the pros of apodizing and lower jitter and the con of no upsampling..

Assuming the above is correct, then which trade off is best?

*CAVEAT* I recognize that the 861's capabilities to BOTH apodize and upsample may depend on whether it is receiving LPCM/PCM versus bitstream...in other words, for bitstream signals it CAN NOT apodize, decode and upsample as it does not have the necessary horsepower whereas for LPCM/PCM signals it can both apodize and upsample becasue, in this instance since it is NOT decoding a bitstream signal, it does have the necessary horsepower...

TIA.

No, the upsampling limitation in the processors only applies to bitstreams which need to be decoded. The processor can't decode and upsample.

Apodizing is a concept that has been introduced to upsampling. They are now inseparable.

Appreciatethe calrification which is in-line with the caveat in my previous posting...

Ahhh, further clarification and understanding...again, greatly appreciated.

The few people with a HD621 that have commented on this forum on the apodizing upsample capablility of the HD621 said that they did not hear any difference. I think it is time that HD621 owners seriously examine what the impact of this filter is. Testing could be very simple. Just make sure upsampling is enabled in the G68 or 861, and listen to the same CD with upsampling enabled and disabled in the HD621. I am very interested in the result!

Actually it is a concept connected to FIR filters, to minimize distortion caused by overlapping of filter windows.

Correction: Apodizing is a concept that has been introduced to Meridian's upsampling.

FWIW, I am one who has commented and think that it does improve the sound for my music server as opposed to going directly into my G68. I have not, however, done rigorous A/B testing and, to be honest, probably won't get around to it. It's impressionistic but it sounds better to me so I'm going to continue to run the music server through the HD621. I leave it to other people to debate the issue.
