Not really necessary George. The difference was chalk & cheese. I should have explained before. Via the Panasonic BD the sound was full with great bottom end but was thin with minimal bass via the Pioneer.

What has me stumped is that I always thought the digital passed straight through from the player but obviously something else is going on. Maybe differences in HDCP handshaking? That is the only difference I can think of.

In other words the Panasonic and HD621 have a friendly handshake but between the Pioneer and HD621 is is less warm!!!

Which raises the spectre that the HD621 might not be so great with some components because of HDCP handshaking differences?? I'm guessing (perhaps wildly) here.

But, as posted earlier, the handshaking between the TV HDD recorded and the HD621 is very good. More investigation needed.

EDIT ADDITION: Just tried out the audio with a commercial DVD and the audio was pretty much the same from both players although possibly slightly better ex the Panasonic. I do not trust auditory memory so the only way to be sure would be to follow George's idea of the same two discs playing and to switch between them. As for the HDMI splitter, again it sounded the same if the splitter was in circuit or not.

I've no idea what was going on last night with that burned DVD. Maybe I'll experiment more later but there are guests here now so it will have to wait.
