Oppo is going to release a RS-232 version, so if you guys want it then all you have to do is request it(I think price is slightly more), I demand RS-232 for my own system as well, so this is very nice indeed
standard Oppo does have IR in and out, which works great as well
thanks

Gary, I'm not up to speed on all of this. Wwould you comment on how these (RS-232 and external IR) can be used. I'm wondering how the Oppo would be controlled in a system with Meridian 861/DSPs. Does that mean two remotes? ...Thanks JimK

Rod, You are raising a very important point: How good does the modified Oppo SOUND with e.g. SACDs via the HDMI or the 4x S/PDIF outputs as compared to a high-end SACD player with an excellent D/A converter and all-analog outputs? Is there an A/B comparison somewhere? Is it possible to compare the two using a Meridian G68/HD621 combo with a modified Oppo vs. e.g. a Lexicon RT-10? Do the Meridian's analog inputs pass the analog signal through to its speaker outputs without any D/A conversions? If you send analogue signals to a Meridian they will always be digitzed since "all" processing inside Meridian is digital. The ADC's in Meridian processors are said to be pretty good, the problem is usually that cheaper players don't have so good DAC implementations (even though the specs are just fine). And of course, even with good components there's two extra conversions compared to straight digital.

I'm in for a stock Oppo + Meridian + region-free, subject of course to final price being agreeable.

Hey Gary , I'm a little concerned about losing some quality by just having HDMI and not 4 x SPDIF , no possibility you could slap an RJ45 out on to one of these for real future-proofing ?? ~M~

M, I am going to try and develop a 4x SPDIF to RJ45 converter in the near future, it will have internal jitter reduction and a few other features
thanks

Gary, A while ago, myself and another HH, tried speaking to M regarding building a RJ-45 interface to the older M gear. In my conversations with M, it was relayed that M did think about this but decided against building a solution. Not sure what it will take for you to build a solution that will mimic the M solution. I am sure you will see enough people will be interested in having a RJ45 solution that will handle COMMS and digital audio signal via one cable. Then again with crazy ideas like this we might keep you busy for a long time Any thoghts?

Gary,
Excuse my ignorance, but how does the MeridianG68 handle the 4 coax digital inputs coming from the modified Oppo BDP-83? It sounds from all I see in this forum that one can connect the Oppo directly to the G68 (without a HD621 in between)in order to reproduce lossless 7.1 ch True HD or DTS-HD formats. Does each SPDIF connection carry the signal of two channels? What settings of the G68 tell it that all four inputs belong to a single source?
With a better understanding of this I can make the decision whether I should opt for the 4 x SPDIF option or not.
Thank you for your patience.

I am about to spec' the first-fix installation in an extension to accommodate my M system and just the thought of explaining the audio coax, the Comm's cable and the face plates is making me lose the will to live...

Are you sure that the G68 converts the signal from its analog inputs to digital and back for its analog outputs even when the "Direct" mode is used? I have connected my SACD player by analog connections to the G68 and use "Direct" on the AUX channel. I thought that this path is analog from source to speaker. I could never get a straight answer from Meridian about this (similar to my question whether the "balanced" outputs have balanced output stages or not).
