@Rodders: Sure, I'd be interested only in the stock Oppo or region-modded Oppo.

I can say this

buying a blu-ray player equal in price to say the Oppo digital transport edition with 4x SPDIF mod is not even going to come close to what this Oppo will do, it will not be at the same quality level of the Oppo with mods and even the capability (4x SPDIF)

the only thing I would put up against the modded Oppo would be a Pioneer 09FD, and at 2200$ US without region free or 4x SPDIF the price is not a comparison

also my prices are going to be much better than the website for what looks to be a massive powerbuy here

interest via PM, email and posting is 10 fold what the Edge was

any other questions or concerns please post them

anyone here that might have a beta/early adopter Oppo and is interested in the digital transport ed with SPDIF please contact me, I would love to have another opinion out there on the forums before this starts, the other early customer went with the SPDIF mod only(he contacted me and said he would try and post some comments this weekend)

thanks

Gary - What's your pre-power buy price for the stock Oppo plus region-free mod? And how does the region-free mod work? (I mean manual/automatic etc.)

Virus, around 750$ or so

the region free mods work manually for the BD part, you simply punch in the zone while the unit is off(1 - 3 on the remote for A - C respectively) then power back up, the DVD part is auto

thanks

Gary,

Very interested in a region free digital transport edition with HD-SDI mod. Would you do something with the VP50Pro HD-SDI card for those that need them ?.

Slightly off-topic but would be curious as to the possibility of a G98DH SDI mod.

Cheers,

Tony.

Rod,
You are raising a very important point: How good does the modified Oppo SOUND with e.g. SACDs via the HDMI or the 4x SPDIF outputs as compared to a high-end SACD player with an excellent D/A converter and all-analog outputs? Is there an A/B comparison somewhere? Is it possible to compare the two using a Meridian G68/HD621 combo with a modified Oppo vs. e.g. a Lexicon RT-10? Do the Meridian's analog inputs pass the analog signal through to its speaker outputs without any D/A conversions?

Tony

certainly, we are authorized DVDO dealers and would be glad to give amazing pricing on the HD-SDI module for anyone that needs it

HD-SDI is so nice on the VP50pro, I personally use both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players with HD-SDI mods with a VP50pro and the image certainly pleases this hardcore videophile, amazing is a good word grin

Rod, I would be willing to bet that the best SQ would be via the SPDIF to the Meridians

with the digital transport mod the jitter is at a bare minimum with the SPDIF outputs, that is due mainly to the updated clock, the shielding, power supply mods and analog section disable helps as well

I think the modified Oppo will please anyone out there audio wise

thanks

Gary,

Do your various SQ mods improve both HDMI and SPDIF digital out? Would you expect any significant sound quality differences between the 4x SPDIF output and HDMI (which would require Meridian HD621 and of course, ignoring the greater extra cost of the HD621).

Being in the UK I'm slightly concerned that "problems" with the Region Free mod would leave the Oppo stuck in USA (Zone A) rather than European (Zone B) as I suspect most of my BD disks would be UK/European. Is this an issue or am I worrying about nothing?

Definitely in the interested camp....

regards

Chris

Hi Gary

Another question regarding the Region Free mod. You mentioned that it needs to be powered down to switch regions. If it's powered down and set to play a UK disc, does the machine revert back to US settings when it's powered back down again after that one viewing? Or will it stay permanently with the region it's been changed to until instructed otherwise? Like Chris above, I'll only ever be using UK discs.

Thanks

George

guys, the region free mod when changed to a specific BD region stays in that configuration until changed again

so most of you would UK guys would simply have to set the unit to region B and leave it there for 95% of the time and would only need to change it to play region A titles, region free titles play on any region setting

Chris, I would venture to say that the SPDIF output will sound better, especially with the digital transport mods, this is because the SPDIF mod output doesn't use the HDMI clock like PCM via HDMI does

the digital transport mods improve HDMI audio and video signals due to the clock upgrade mainly, but the shielding, power supply and analog audio disable helps as well

thanks, I think I am going to setup a pre-order page for this powerbuy very soon, maybe today, the interest is starting to overwhelm me literally, people are dying to get their order in and secured

thanks very much

One more thing Gary. Am I right in thinking that the BDP-83 doesn't have RS232 control, and that Oppo are going to produce a version which does?
