Okay. I finally figured it out. Ignore the error message and set the "Main audio input" on the G68xxx to MD1 or MD2 as necessary for each source connected to the HD621. I don't have a HD621 yet but this is what I assumed you should do in the config. 1. I guess with this set up the G68 will not know the difference between sources going through the 621. It will just be "621" to the processor. Correct? So what if you want to apply different DSPs to the difference sources? You can have different sources have different default DSP modes. It can be setup as if the HDMI inputs were native.

George is correct. The sources connected to the HD621 are mapped as phantom sources on the G68ADV. Selecting a (phantom) source of the G68ADV selects the physical source on the HD621, applies the DSP settings and changes the physical input on the G68ADV to MD1 or MD2 as the case may be.
I was thrown off track by the error message and lack of documentation. The need to set the main audio input on the G68ADV should be documented or better yet done automagically.

Two naive questions but here goes as I try to improve my understanding of the HD621 and audio EDID settings...
1. As I will be connecting the HD621 to the 861 via MD1 (i.e. D1 to D3) the mximum number of channels that can be sent from the HD621 to the 861 is 6...as such, should the HD621's variable "Linera PCM" be set to 6 channels or 8 channels?
2. As far as audio EDID is concerned I am still on the learning curve and would appreciate someone explaining to me the source / use of the following formats:
a) PCM 2 CH 44.1 Khz (which I belive is redbook CD)
b) PCM 2 CH 48.0 Khz which is for ________________
c) PCM 2 CH 96.0 Khz which is for ________________
d) PCM 5.1 44.1 Khz which is for ________________
e) PCM 5.1 48.0 Khz which is for ________________
f) PCM 5.1 96.0 Khz which is for ________________
Thanks, in advance, so much and, to that end, I do hope that others benefit from this as well...

I am not too sure of the second question. I will leave it to the experts.

Sorry. One more question. In mconfig I currently have the DSP settings on the G68 for my BR player set to "cinema" for mc/movie. The BR player will now be sending decoded HD audio when playing BR movies and the usual lossy formats for DVDs. Should I set the DSP to "discrete" now or leave it on "cinema?"
Thanks again!

Discrete is generally for music and cinema is for movies. They default the LFE settings appropriately.

I prefer PLIIx Mov6 to Cinema. The steering logic and surround derivation sounds better than Cinema. The differences is less noticible in a 5.1 setup compared to 7.1 setup.
It does feel wierd to see PLIIx Mov6 for DTS material on the OSD.

That seems incredibly counter-intuitive to me. Okay, it is counter-intuitive. Why populate the HD621 with the ports if you can't connect your HDMI devices directly and have MConfig handle it for you? I hope that gets updated in a future MConfig. Cheers,

a) PCM 2 CH 44.1 Khz (which I belive is redbook CD) Generally yes, this is there to allow for "universal" players to output CD directly. b) PCM 2 CH 48.0 Khz which is for ________________ Stereo on DVD and Blu-ray. This can be "plain old stereo" or Dolby stereo. c) PCM 2 CH 96.0 Khz which is for ________________ High Res Stereo on DVD and Blu-ray. d) PCM 5.1 44.1 Khz which is for ________________ Nothing, really -- theoretically a player with PL / PLII / Matrix extraction could output a 5.1 signal from a stereo CD. e) PCM 5.1 48.0 Khz which is for ________________ Movies and Music on DVD / Blu-ray / HD-DVD. f) PCM 5.1 96.0 Khz which is for ________________ Movies and Music on DVD-Audio / Blu-ray / HD-DVD. Theoretically the following are also "legal": g) PCM 5.1 88.2 KHz which is for DVD-Audio and (potentially) DSD --> PCM conversion) h) PCM 2.0 88.2 KHz (see previous) i) PCM 2.0 176.4 KHz which is for DVD-Audio and DSD --> PCM conversion j) PCM 2.0 192 KHz which is for DVD-Audio / Blu-ray / HD-DVD. Cheers,

It does feel wierd to see PLIIx Mov6 for DTS material on the OSD. Sorry if I'm taking you too literally but your response above is confusing. I don't believe a 5.x setup has PLIIx Mov6 as a choice (so how could it be a less noticable improvement in 5.1?). It's only available on 7.x setups. Why is it weird to see PLIIx Mov6 on DTS, you should have always had it with 7.1 setup. HD621 does not add that capability. All an HD621 adds for lossy DTS/DD is basically upsampling. But that requires switching from decoding in Meridian preamp and handing that job over to your player.

>Why is it weird to see PLIIx Mov6 on DTS, you should have always had it with 7.1 setup. HD621 does not add that capability. PLIIx is Dolby technology. So, seeing Dolby on DTS material is just wierd for me-phsycologically. I didn't say that HD621 adds a new issue. That issue always existed. >I don't believe a 5.x setup has PLIIx Mov6 as a choice. You are right about that. Now I am wondering what I comparing??? Does pot do that to you?

John:
Appreciate your response but have two quick follow ups:
1. For a Blu-Ray player that is a) being added to an HD621 and 861 combination and b) will only be used for Blu-Ray movies would be safe to use only the "PCM 5.1 96.0 Khz" EDID or is there a need for others?
2. When M finally releases MMHR connection card for the 861 would in then be appropriate to change the HD621 "Linear PCM" setting from 6 to 8 because, at that point, the 861 will be able to accept 8 discrete channels.
Thanks so much...
