I'm updating my configuration in anticipation of the arrival of an HD621.

A few questions:

1. Is there any reason to connect my TIVO box (or any source that does not output HD audio) to this unit other than to save running one additional coax from the TIVO to my G68? In other words, will it improve SQ from non-HD audio signals comapred to going direct to the G68?

2. IIUC since there is only one HDMI output for video, I could not listen to sound from one device and watch the video from another device connected to the HD621. Correct?

3. I have to add the HD621 to my G68 configuration and update the 68. I think, however, that to update the settings on the HD621 I have to create a separate mconfig file for it. Correct?

Thanks for any help.

PS: I have a Radiance XD. Has anyone used the HD621 with a Radiance? Were there any problems?

PPS: I suppose at some point it would be good to do a wiki on the HD621 setup. Agree?

1. No.
2. Correct.
3. Don't know.

Hope that helps a bit.

P.S. I have not used an HD HD621 with a Radiance XD so I can't help you there

HI Jack d

No1 you will have to be the judge of that. No2 if the input is set to Last Valid on the audio source in the HD621 Properties, [source] setting it will show the Vido from the last vido input. No 3 the new mconfig is for G68 & HD621 you save to G68 then save to HD621 one file. CD comes with HD621 with new mconfig.

Jack D:

If the HD621 functions similarly to the HDMax 421, you would configure everything in a single MConfig setup, then download individually to each device, i.e. your processor and the HD621.

After performing listening tests I prefer 2 channel FLACs through HD621 from my HDI Dune BD Player. The coax (with internal G68 upsampling) sounds "cleaner" but does not have the same sense of space or musicality. Through the HD621 the material sounded more true. BUT we are all used to the coax input so you will probably need to digest the sound at first. The HD621 also seem to reinforce the bass somewhat in my setup.

Yes you can with the last valid video input and phantom source.

You save the complete project file on your HDD but you store the config in both the HD621 and then the G68. Ofcourse if you didn't update the config in the "other" device it makes no sense of storing it again, so just store to the device you make changes to.

Thanks for the replies. It clears up some things.

Regarding the "last valid" input, I'm not sure how that would work. Let's say you have a TIVO and a BR/SACD/DVD-A player connected to the HD621. You watch a movie. So the 68 switches to the BR player input and then via the Meridian Comm, the HD621 switches to that input for video and audio. Fine

Now say you want to listen to an SACD but watch TV. The 68 stays on the same input. So how do you get the HD621 to pass through the video from the TIVO rather than from the BR?

Jack,

Meridian uses digital switching so think of the 6 HDMI inputs in the HD621 as actually 6 discrete audio inputs and 6 discrete video inputs. The last valid tag box is used for setting up audio sources that do not have a matching video input.

You set up "Last Valid" for the video input of the SACD source. Then if you want to watch TIVO while listening to SACD, you would then simply select the TIVO first, then switch to SACD. The audio switching would change independently from the TIVO to SACD whereas the video switching would remain unchanged from the "Last Valid" video source, which was the TIVO.

This is how it should work unless anything has changed.

Cheers,

Steve

Hmm. OK. Sounds like it's doable. I'll have to fiddle with the set up when I get the HD621. I think I will also have to re-program my pronto remote a bit. I think it will be interesting to see if connecting a TIVO to the HD621 will improve on SQ for broadcast TV. thanks.

I have installed an HD621 with the output using a 3-RCA to VGA connector to my 568.2MM. What is the colour coding convention for the red/Green/blue connections to the smartlink outputs? I can find nothing in the M website.

Well you wouldn't because it's not an official means of connection. Try the following Wiki article: http://www.meridianunplugged.com/wiki/index.php?pagename=568

Many thanks as usual for the constructive suggestions. I just checked and it so happens I had the coloured connections in the right place. Everything is up and running, and I'm just now listening to David Gilmour's Live at the RAH on Blu. It is only 2ch through my Pioneer BDP-LX70 but at least it is now at 96K. It will take while to get listening impresions.

Audio goes LX-70 (or Oppo 980H) -> iScan VP50 -> HD621 -> 568.2MM -> L/R: Innersound Stereo Electrostatic amp -> Quad ESL 63; Centre: Innersound Mono ESLA -> Martin Logan Cinema; Subs: Stereo pair of JL Fathom f112s; L/R Rear: -> Quad 520f -> ML Script.
