George:
Do you ever watch (shudder) television on your Pioneer?
Have you considered the benefits for watching television on your display?
Cheers, I watch television all the time. Why shudder? Who can miss 24 or CSI Miami !! Have not watched Idol this year, but I still squeeze in dancing with stars, can't miss Julianna !!!

I'd also be curious to comments of Video Processing Benefits to an BD Player feeding a 50" Plasma (e.g. Kuro) from new owners.
I asked this question from a reputable DVDO supplier in the UK as I was interested in the Edge (having a Kuro KRP 500A plasma) and was told that it would not add anything worthwhile to my picture. I would need to go further up the range to obtain worthwhile benefits. For this reason I am now looking at the potentially cheaper option of the modded Octavia

Rod I have a 600A and have ordered one of these. Perhaps some may just use their very expensive plasma to only watch Blu-ray but for me that would be a waste. Right from the outset I thought this was a good looking solution with 5 sources. From a great company IMHO, I have owned many anchor bay products. Now as a HUGE bonus for me this gives me 1st class deinterlacing and great scaling. Whether it is better on some, none or all TRUE native HD sources? well at least I have the option to try as opposed to just take someones opinion. But to have PREP and be able to improve the multitude of food my 600A gets is a great opportunity. My sources: Sky HD; HD-XE1; Blu-Ray; HTPC (HD_DVD & Blu-ray) Technomate 6900 Super; Popcorn 110 Oppo 983..... Oh have I forgot to mention why this was supposed to be a good idea in the beginning, something to do with Meridian and SPDIF MHR C'mon people I think later others will wish they had gone for this No I have not been offered an extra 5% discount for my thoughts I just genuinely think this will turn out to be a sought after bit of kit period. Cheers Martin

I myself watch more Sky HD than Bluray and have to say that the picture quality is exceptional and hard to believe would be significantly improved with the Edge. Like everything else small improvements can cost a lot and in any case who has 20/20 vision? The important element is SPDIF MHR for DVD/Bluray (SKY excluded for now) and the scenario is similar to buying a car, a little more buys this feature that feature etc.....where do you stop ?
If people are willing to pay about 850 for the edge and take the risks associated with importing and any potential support problems that may arise in the future (DVDO won't be interested) then fine but I do believe that the requirement will be met by a cheaper alternative in the near future

Rod Rod I understand your thoughts I am sure a cheaper alternative will come along for the SPDIF HMR (marginally there already is) but they will not have all these functions. Sky HD is still 90% + SD and the fact that you cannot get interlaced SD from its HDMI port makes the PREP function of the EDGE invaluable. I used PREP from my now sold VP50 before buying my 600A Martin

Have not watched Idol this year, but I still squeeze in dancing with stars, can't miss Julianna !!! 24 and CSI Miami are shot on film at 24 fps Seems like that could help. Rather OT but relevant to the last couple of posts: I know a number of very intelligent folk that religiously watch American Idol yet would NEVER buy a CD or even burn an album off I-tunes by one of Simon Cowell's "pre-packaged and merchandised-to-death" pop stars. I even include my television producing wife amongst the people who I'd think would know better! SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT: BTW: my wife's current show, Howie Do It, airs on NBC (Global in Canada) on Friday evenings. Not terribly deep television either but a hidden camera prank show with a rather nasty sense of humour certainly appeals to my sensibilities much more so than Idol... Happy Trails! I hope when our "mystery" Hiker gets his Edge we get a readout on how well it does with SD tv. I watched the Australian GP in sd on Dish Network with my 720P/1080i Pioneer last weekend and the pq was terrible. If the Edge makes a significant improvement I'll probably go for one. Otherwise I'll have Gary mod the Oppo BD 83 when it's available.

I don't doubt a processor might help SD but I rarely ever watch SD any more.
