the Gefen device won't actually be programmed, it has built in EDID presets(with dip switches) that will do exactly what we need, that way we won't have to worry about it losing its EDID memory that I saved into it

and yes no power needed, very small box with very short cable between it and the Edge

thanks

ok before I start the sale I want to go over a few things, first some pics:

The Edge scaler has been modified with Shawn Foggs very capable boards, I work with alot of mod PCBs and Shawns are some of the best I have seen, the Edge for future proof capability uses the 4X board to deliver all 8 channels of PCM audio

I have chosen Neutrik 24K Gold RCA connectors that are isolated from the panel, these are very high-end RCA connectors that will serve the unit well for many years

internally I designed the mod to have the shortest possible signal lines and input wiring

This Edge modified for 4x SPDIF output was tested with various sources including the Panasonic BD30 BD player, Toshiba A35 HD player, a Oppo 981 DVD player. a Oppo 980 DVD player, a Onkyo 885 pre-amp, a DVDO VP50pro scaler and more

The Edge with mod passes any number of channels from 2 to 8 and works perfectly with 44.1KHZ, 48KHZ, 88.2KHZ and 96KHZ signals

Input sources will need to be set to do internal decoding via PCM output only, sending bitstream audio into the Edge and out of the mod will resort in noise

unlike I had originally planned the Edge didn't want to play nice with all sources with nothing connected to the HDMI outputs, most people will in fact want to use the video processing and HDMI outputs, so in the end I had to add a small addition device to the unit to enable 100% functionality in any and all systems, this is a small Gefen Detective unit

being that the Edge has 2 HDMI outputs, 1 labeled video/audio/main and a 2nd labeled audio only, the addition of this Gefen device is foolproof, you simply set the Edge setup menus to output the audio portion of the incoming HDMI signals to the audio only HDMI output, combined with the Gefen unit, this enables you to connect any display to the main HDMI input and not worry about it screwing with your 8 channel PCM audio, meaning you can connect any display to the Edge, even one that has a 2 channel PCM EDID, the Edge ignores this and reads the audio only HDMI output which is connected to the Gefen unit

so in short, you do whatever you want when you want, no HDMI sync is needed or you can use any monitor you want, turn it on of off or disconnect it while playing your audio, it simply doesn't matter, it is foolproof

the Gefen unit is to remain connected to the audio only HDMI output at all times, it does not require a power supply, just the connection between the scaler and unit

my recommendation for those that don't need display scaling or don't have HDMI display capability is this:

get a small 15" LCD monitor like the Westinghouse W1603, this is a small 720p LCD, connect it to the Edge video HDMI output and you instantly have a display to monitor all your sources while you have your main display turned off(no point wasting hours on that RS20 or CRT!!), perfect for viewing SACD display info or DVD-Audio, or showing off sound of a BD/HD-DVD disc while not needing video

the Edge is 100-240v capable out of the box, it comes with a US style power cord, so you will need a adapter for use in your region, we can include this with your order if requested

this powerbuy will include:

Edge Scaler with everything you normally get, power cable remote etc.
4x SPDIF mod with 24k gold RCAs
Gefen Detective
Short HDMI to DVI cable for the Gefen to audio only HDMI output on Edge

I will be posting details on the powerbuy later this evening, please post any any all questions you may have about the mod or even scaler functionality

thanks guys, appreciate the opportunity very much

Gary, you've clearly put a ton of time and effort into this, and I hope that this does indeed work out well for you financially. I trust that all of the questioners who have suggested a myriad of options and configurations for you to research will come up with the bucks.

Best regards

George

forgive me i have brain freeze, when using a ps3 and watching Bluray we select
pcm to decode in the player thus getting the lossless codecs, but playing a ps3 game it will be dd or dts which we normally decode in our Meridian processors what is the work around here can we still connect digital out on the ps3 without toggling the settings in the ps3
brains stopped working

Why not use the Gefen Detective Plus with both HDMI input and output rather than the one with the DVI connection?

"Why not use the Gefen Detective Plus with both HDMI input and output rather than the one with the DVI connection? "

That shouldn't really matter either way as I think the functions of the box are identical going by their manuals. I suspect that is the same hardware just with different connectors on them.

Since the Gefen is most likely going to be hanging in the back of a rack I think the DVI connectors might be preferable since you can screw them in to be sure they don't come loose there. Of course the other end needs to be HDMI to fit the Edge.

The Gefen box just passes almost all the connections straight through it doesn't have DVI/HDMI receiver/transmitters in it. That is why this 'DVI' device will pass audio just fine even though DVI can't do that. The Gefen just ties into the DDC line to be able to learn an EDID (or use a built in) and to transmit it as needed. For HDCP messages it just passes them through.

This really belongs in another topic. But I think once you tell PS3 to send PCM out HDMI it does for everything (i.e. decodes everything).
