Would you be adding the 4xRCA (presumably in the blank space next to the optical out), rather than replacing any of the current jacks? (I'd need both of those component ins)

Cheers,
David.

Gary,

This may be a dumb question but for the benefit of us Aussies and Brits, would the Edge be capable of receiving and processing PAL video signal inputs either on component or HDMI ?

Cheers,

Steve

David, I am going to add 4 nice gold RCA jacks to the right of the audio section, they will be labeled and maybe color coded jacks

thanks

Steve, the Edge is a middle level video scaler, much better in comparison to stuff like a receiver or pre-amp with scaling built it, you can do pretty much anything you want, full PAL capability including conversion to and from NTSC if you need it, you name it this thing will probably do it

take a look at this spec sheet:

http://www.anchorbaytech.com/docs/pdf/DVDO_EDGE_Datasheet.pdf

5 rear HDMI 1.3 inputs and one on the front, all sending your PCM audio via the 4x SPDIF mod, being the unit has a second audio dedicated HDMI output the PCM audio is always flowing so you can connect your display to the main HDMI output with no consequence or care to the PCM output mod, those that want this as a nice audio only unit need not connect anything to either HDMI output and the mod still functions as needed, you simply switch sources, though most people will enjoy the video side as a bonus if they don't have a scaler already

thanks Steve

Few questions.

If I watch only 1080i or 720p broadcasts on a TIVO or BD movies on a PS3 in 1024p on a Kuro PRO-111 (50") what does a Video processor do for me these days on this scale of equipment?

Will this use Shawns Board?

What is special about the DVDO Edge that makes this mod doable where as prior products that have been moded needed the to logic to extract the 8 channels of PCM. Where is that logic coming from? I assume that logic doesn't exist in the DVDO Edge? Is it the fact that it has the means to extract DD/DTS (i.e. 1 bitstream) and once you have that getting the other "3 Bitstreams" is easy?

One of the things that my Radiance can do is to wrap an optical PCM/bitstream input on top of the HDMI video (SkyHD scenario). I guess that the Edge may be able to do something similar.

What will the Edge do for you with only 1080i, 720p and 1080p24 inputs? Not much, IMO. Better 1080i video deinterlacing maybe? What will the Radiance do? Give you oodles of calibration feature, including gamut correction; a fully calibrated HT has to be seen to be appreciated.

The modded Edge will use Shawn's board, yes.

Apart from being a good switch with both HDMI and analog sources, it has mosquito noise reduction which is "Deemed good". What it lacks is adjustment possibilities, but you need to sacrifice something when you get otherwise the same functions that is in DVDO VP-30+ABT102 or a VD-50 - they cost $2-3,000...

And it will work as a sink if you want to play music without your TV on.

The Edge is a superb bit of kit, for a start the adjustments on it are far better than anything you will get on a receiver, and the way you can tweak the edge enhancement and fine detail to get a razor sharp image is almost worth it alone.

I would be well up for a modded unit. I was about to order one of Shawns boards but think I will hold off to see if this happens, I'm sure he doesn't car if a sale is direct or through you guys, not like he is missing out. wink

Custom HT will be using Shawns PCM gear wink

if someone needs some video processing then this unit is ideal for sure, if this works for anyone why would you mod sources when you can input 6 of them and have your PCM for them all? whistle

thanks

Virus I agree on your point, but the edge provides basic scaler functionality that will destroy a receiver/pre-amp setup and will do better than anything short of a VP50pro or Radiance

the price difference is massive, you could buy 4 of these modified units for the price of one unmodified Radiance

thanks

The Elite Kuro can be calibrated near perfect http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=117496&d=1219375113 so I'm not sure how much a Radiance would add as far as calibration goes.

Hi Gary. My comments were in the context of George having a Kuro which, IIRC, has excellent video processing. For lesser displays, the Edge will add a lot, particularly wrt deinterlacing, scaling and NR.
