I have had an official reply from Meridian concering no repeat and ff/fr functions on DVDA's, this is a known issue and not a fault with my machine.

This is not reflected in my manuels which say the repeat and ff/fr are avaliable with DVDA, there was also no extra not in the package saying that these function where not working so i thought my 598 was malfunctioning not a nice thought after buying a 598 and 568.2mm at same time. Fel better that its no my 598

BUT would of like Meridian to enclose info in the box that would of stopped me worrying.

I do not think this is good practice not to inform customer of known probs(or was this a known prob i.e lack of product testing) any thoughts on this.

skooby - was your dealer not helpful in diagnosing these problems?

i find that Meridian tosses a lot of stuff like that to its dealers and assumes they'll be helpful and you'll contact them first.

certainly bad form on Meridian's part if they shipped out units with known problems and didn't make any mention of it.

have they clued you in on when/how it'll get fixed? presumably it's just a software revision?

doody.

The ff/fr is a problem with most, if not all, DVD-A (and possibly SACD) players. You may never get the same ff/fr experience with DVD-A / SACD that you get with CD because of the unpacking of data during playback.

It does not simply uncompress the file in memory, and then play, like a PC with a .zip file. It is unpacking as you go. So to unpack for ff/fr, it has to have a buffer and work its butt off.

One of the bottle necks is the data transfer from the loader. There is a little player from China using an MPEG decoder from MediaTek. This MPEG decoder is actually part of the loader. Its navigation is faster than anything I have ever seen. It will go from full FW to full FR smooth as silk. They can do it because they have the MPEG decoder attached to the loader.

Of course the image quality is something else all together.

Thanks for replys:

1)As regards dealer's help i think they did not know of the prob as the product is very new, if fact they have unly just got a demo in. They supplyed the 598 on the understanding that if i wasnt happy they would tack it back as no in store demo was possable cant say fairer than that.

Seems that Meridian iether didnt know of probs or didnt inform dealer or customers.

2)The ff/fr does not work period it mutes/unmutes sound but does not speed up playback nor does fff/ffr if this is an issue with all dvda then the manuel should say so. Also the repeat function for track or disk does not function i do not believe the is due to the format fo dvda but as Meridian suggest a software prob. again no mention of this in the manuel.

Mayby these are only small probs as the overall product is great, but it would of saved me some worry and phone call and visists to the dealer on these issues, some reference to these probs shouls have been mentioned if known in the manuels, if they werent known why wasnt the product fully tests before being sold to the public?

thx skooby

That's what I've been doing with my dealer. You can't buy this stuff with out in home demo's even if they did have everything on display.
