Meridian's FIFO is averaging digital sources. Servers do sound different on most DACs and processors. But with Meridian it's more or less the same, except ones with poorly implemented digital output (by this i mean improper termination). Digital cables also make difference, if they do not meet standard (unforunately that's 95% of SPDIF cables).
I miss my old Meridian setup.

I Split the Alternative Speakers off to another thread. I know it was not a perfect split.
Please keep this on the CD vs Music Server topic.

The only time I use my G91 is for DVD-A playback, I have an SACD player too for MC SACD discs. Most of my music goes from my Mac via Airport Express. I do occasionally listen to CD's on my F80 when it isn't plugged into my Mac, like last night I listened to the "Chronos" soundtrack and Saint-Sans "Carnival of the Animals" whilst in bed. So I suppose there still is a place for disc spinners in my life...

a@a, stop turning the heat up or I'll have to shut down this thread too. Everytime you say Windblows I'm offended and I'll bet others are too. Why don't you take some of your own advice and stop offending folks.

i'm w/ you fanz. and for the record there are some here that insist on accusing others of that which they themselves are guilty of and so it goes. those very same people bashed servers in a most rude manner only to finally appreciate the superiority of servers despite claiming otherwise (i guess after you sink over $12k on a spinner you have to rationalize it somehow).
i believe fanz has the right to express himself anyway he pleases so long as it is not offensive, which it has not even mildy been to date.
like i've said for years here M will be reduced to a speaker company -- the absolute best digital speaker company and one day they will sell algorithms and perhaps even apps for your Mac and WInblowz to run their processing in 5/21/34/etc. .1/.2.
i am convinced, in a quasi religious based faith, that M is the absolute best speaker manufacturer in the world. i believe like many things dsp speakers are to some degree an acquired taste -- if you like bright and forward and exaggerated sound (like b&w) then you won't "get" the M approach....but when you finally do understand M's angle there's no going back.... So, have you got your DSP 8000s yet? And would you be prepared to ask your dealer to lend you and 808.2 to compare with your server, or is your mind made up?

I'm very curious on how my Audio/Video server will sound like through the HD621, will it finally push my server jitter through the floor? Also I'm not at all offended by the windblowz. We've all had our moments with bills creation, some good some bad, some disastrous

Crion,
I wish someone could pull off some kind of scientific test where they play the exact same recording with increasing levels of jitter. That way we could get a real world understanding of at what point jitter really is perceptible. Manufacturers will play the numbers game until they get jitter down to zero. That's just marketing a product. But as consumers we need to know at what point enough is enough. Who wants to be in a position of paying a huge premium for the lowest jitter measurements when jitter below x PS, and for sale at a much lower price, is actually undetectable? I surely don't. For all we know our current servers may have passed that threshold point, and we may actually be chasing something we really don't need.
Has anyone heard of such a test or know of some way to inject jitter a recording with maybe pro software?

Everyone, please keep the heat less than mild simmer and keep the serious data coming as this stuff is very educational for me. It would be a shame if George had to close this thread.

Crion, Can you please elaborate to an intermediate level what this entails. I assume the signal goes from a single digital out to the HD621 and then it comes out to my G68 through MHR (3 blue wires). But I am confused with other informatin on this forum. Will any server, including the Sooloos, sent out the format (i have no clue what that is called) that will work through the HD621 or is it just one specialized unit from Israel that is compatible. Sorry for probably being very mixed up here but I seem to be transitioning from pure neophyte to dangerously minimally educated.

I agree a test would be nice. I'd like to see such a test done with and without Meridian FIFO.

The Acoustical Society of Japan conducted just such a test. Detection Threshold for Distortions Due to Jitter on Digital AudioThe test was flawed for a number of reasons, but they found that jitter was not audible to trained listeners until it reached several hundreds of nanoseconds (several hundreds of thousands of picoseconds) which is an unbelievably high amount. Depending on whose doing the measuring, most decent CD players have jitter of less than 250 picoseconds. I am unaware of any software program that would allow you to conduct your own tests.

Sorry for probably being very mixed up here but I seem to be transitioning from pure neophyte to dangerously minimally educated. Ok, I'll try: My Audio/Video server can play HD and Blu-Ray today but it can't output LPCM audio over HDMI (which the HD621 needs), this changes with the ATI Radeon 4850 graphics/audio card. This card can output HDMI with 8 channel LPCM sound. HDMI is output directly to the HD621 and from there with 3xSPDIF to the G68/861. The PC based HD Audio/Video server has some simple basic needs * Dual Core Processor * ATI 4850 Radeon Graphics/Audio card * Internal storage or NAS available somewhere on your network * PowerDVD/TMT Media player * AnyDVD HD for ripping Blu-Ray to HDD or NAS. * 100Mbit network Sooloos is not an HD Audio/Video server yet, but I have a feeling Meridian is gearing up for it, otherwise they wouldn't go through the trouble of buying the company. The HDI BD Prime Client does do everything on paper, it plays Blu-Rays and decodes the advanced lossless Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD audio formats and outputs them over LPCM into your HD621. I have not recieved it yet, but I will test it soon I hope. I consider this a beta project, but might get stable within a year, possibly sooner. Just getting a Sony BDP 550 BD Player is ofcourse the easy way of getting a BD disc played with all advanced lossless formats decoded to your HD621, but I see spinners as interim..

Yes, but at least the Sony does not cost a fortune and it seems to offer decent performance.
