Meridian's FIFO is averaging digital sources. Servers do sound different on most DACs and processors. But with Meridian it's more or less the same, except ones with poorly implemented digital output (by this i mean improper termination). Digital cables also make difference, if they do not meet standard (unforunately that's 95% of SPDIF cables).
