To be fair to Meridian, it's only us nit-pickers that know it's there! Most people won't.

I wonder if Meridian refer to this community as something as gentle as nit-pickers? laugh If at all? cry

Robbo, Hear Hear. My sentiment exactly.

Phase 1 (Now):
Current 800 DVD HDMI out and 6 channels of MHR.
Plus 800-HD621 HDMI Card
Plus 800-MMHR 8 Channel Card

Phase 2 (2009 ish):
800 DVD HDMI out and (optional HDD Server integration)
Plus 800-HD621 HDMI Card
Plus 800-MMHR 8 Channel Card

Phase 3 (2010 ish):
800 Blu-Ray HDMI out (and optional HDD Server integration)
Plus 800-HD621 HDMI Card
Plus 800-MMHR 8 Channel Card

With new (upgrades for ) G series models following suit.
Now would be an elegant two box (Audio + Video) solution.

861v6+ID40, HD621, 8000.2, 7200HC, 7200.2, SKYQ Silver, PS3, PDP-LX6090, QNAP TS870-Pro (8*6TB), Roon, iPadAir2.
[In Reserve] C15, MD600 (2*3TB), TwinStore RM (2*2TB)

Phase 4 (2012 ish):
800 Blu-Ray+HDD-server: HDMI (video only) + 8ch. MMHR+Smartlink
Plus 800-MMHR 8 Channel Card

Phase 5 (ever?):
800 Blu-Ray+HDD-server+processing: HDMI (video only) + 8ch. MMHR

Nice to dream about the future smile

Perhaps I am missing something here, as I am new to Meridian products...
(my 861 is due to be delivered tomorrow, I can't wait!)

If I am to use my PS3 as my souce, what is the difference of using this unit or using the following setup:

PS3 Optical Out -> 861 Optical In
PS3 HDMI Out -> Sony TV HDMI In

What is the benefit of running it all through the HDMI in conjuntion with the HD621?

Speakers: B&W's - 800D (2), HTM1D, CCM817 (4), JL Fathom (2)
Amps: MC501 (3) & Adcom 7500
Pre/Pro: Meridian 861v8
Sources: Sooloos/Roon, Kaleidescape

PS3 HDMI Out -> HD621 -> Sony TV HDMI In
HD621 -> 861 Smartlink

This will unleash the full lossless audio potential of Blu-Ray movies in your system.

The setup you mentioned will only get you lossy audio.

PS3 Optical Out to 861 Optical In will give you standard Dolby Digital and DTS, both of which are lossy (compressed) formats.

PS3 HDMI Out to Sony TV HDMI In will give you stereo (through little speakers)

PS3 HDMI Out to HD621 HDMI In to HD621 3xSPDIF Out to 861 3xSPDIF In will give you Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, both of which are high resolution lossless (uncompressed) formats.

It's a little like the difference between MP3s and CDs

Bottom line - PS3 to HD621 to 861 is going to sound much better.

Not to get too far off topic but how would you compare the CLUX soln to the HD621? I know this has been asked before, but for "someguy" and myself who want to get the BD lossless codecs into their 861 (currently using Panny BD50 and IA45 analog inputs). I am about to order the CLUX from S. Fogg (3x SPDIF). Would there be any benefit in ordering the 4X SPDIF? Will M be increasing their inputs to 8 channel soon? Again, sorry if this is off topic.
