Hello

My system is G61 (not the model), G08, Sony BDP-S550, 558.2, B&W 802D- mains, B&W HTM2D -center, Velodyne FSR12- sub, B&W LM1- surrounds (wife acceptance factor.)

I have the Sony BDP-S550 connected to the G61 via multichannel analog.

Would the same list of advantages vs. disadvantages apply?

Would integrating the HD621 to my system improve the 5.1 sound quality enough to justify the cost?

Also I may have misunderstood a previous post but did I read that Meridian might provide a 4X SPDIF upgrade for 7.1 Dolby TrueHD , DTS -HD Master Audio. If so, could this be done via firmware upgrade and would Meridian apply this upgrade to the G61?

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the outstanding summary that was so clear that even I was able to understand it. I draw a conclusion that seems too good to be true. For a non techie like me who wants the best sound without getting bogged in problems the modified CLUX11SA would get me an immediate and significant upgrade in sound from my Pioneer Bluray for negligible cost. Is there any reason that I should not order this from Shawn tonight?

I would further ask why anyone would not do this and wait for the HD621 instead, but I am afraid that that answer would be over my head.

The modded Octava might be a better choice if you have multiple HDMI sources.

The HD621 will apply some additional audio processing (reclocking and reshaping) so should have reduced jitter in its output compared to the Clux. Whether or not this leads to audible improvment is debatable especially when you consider that the audio signal will get similar treatment when it arrives at your G68. Time may tell.

1) Buy a player with 5.1 analogue outputs to connect directly to the G68.

Advantages: Cheap; simple.
Disadvantage: Extra D2A and A2D conversions; music bass management layout applied.

2) Buy a player in the States, ship it directly to Shawn Fogg for a 3x (or 4x) SPDIF modification (or buy a 3x SPDIF card from Shawn and manage the modification yourself). You can then connect it digitally to one of the two G68 multichannel digital inputs.

Advantages: Cheaper than HD621 solution.
Disadvantages: Logistical nightmare if you want a Region B player; music layout applied; higher jitter?

4) Buy a player and the HD621.
Advantages: Lowest jitter solution, proper Meridian support and integration.
Disadvantage: Cost.

Or 5) Wait till Meridian releases a proper onboard solution.

My guess is they produced this box to keep their customer base happy and not to scare off potential customers. But really they rather would have waited untill the HDMI specs are up to their standards. Which I really do not understand, because ie. is the SPDIF spec that great? This is where the high-end companies can make their difference !!!

But given what Meridian has continually stated re: keeping video and audio separated it's exceedingly unlikely that will see an on-board HDMI solution?

The HD621 *is* the solution. The only card we should expect is one to accept the MMHR connections...

Disagree entirely. You'll end up waiting for a long time. IMO, the HD621 is a very elegant solution which opens up downstream Meridian processing to *any* PCM source, not just a Meridian source. *Any*

While Meridian's processors need to contain analogue components (ADCs and DACs), feeding Gigahertz frequency digital into the same box is an idea fraught with problems. The fact that other manufacturers have done so is irrelevant.

There may come a day when Bob is not Technical Director and Meridian product decisions are made on purely marketing grounds. That will be a sad day.

I think so too - you will have a very long wait for a Meridian audio/video processor.

I like the 2-box solution. I don't have to buy a new processor and I can stack my sources (PS3, HDDVD, Freesat PVR) away from my main rack where there's not much room left.

My rack is also full, but i can always kick out the 800. Sits there as a big black brick. If there is no future to make it play Bluray, its is becoming useless. Only a DVD-A a few times a year..

Well I do not like the extra box solution. And I do not understand why many other do accept this concept from Meridian. Especially since they have always made such a big deal about the modular design of the 800-series.

What a better time to start making a 861v6 audio only version and a 800v4 BR/DVD video only version then. But no here comes the HD621.

1. So what about the 'amazing' sound quality of both 800 and G9x DVD player. Both have/can be had with HDMI
2. Is their really a big difference in putting in a card in a 861 machine and a seperate HD621 box on top of a 861. It's only 2 layer of 0,5mm sheetmetal and a seperate powersupply that makes the difference if the Gigahertz is the real problem.

Once again too sum this up: these Gigahertz interference / HDMI based high Jitter or what ever other type of issue it makes them want to hold off HDMI in their processors. The solving of these issues / making it work better than the competition is what makes a high-end brand stand out.

So the HD621 is no longer on the Meridian web site and the reference to it in the News section - "New products debut at CES' - has been removed - I'm pleased I haven't put my 421 on eBay...
