[quote=Frank I don't expect an HD621 on a card for the 861 or the G68 given Bob's stated opinion that putting video processing other than simple switching in a surround sound processor is a bad idea. [/quote] But if that card where fitted in to an 800 which already has video Bob should still be happy. And I would be very happy

But if that card where fitted in to an 800 which already has video Bob should still be happy. And I would be very happy You need to have a Blu-ray drive in the 800 as well to take advantage of the lossless codecs, which is the raison d'etre of the HD621. That has not been announced.

DAC1 is 2 channel isn't it? G68 is 7.1. I'd expect some performance difference as one is doing a lot more than the other...even if they had the same chips inside.

So you are saying the Benchmark DAC-1 is 10 times better. That's quite a statement. Well I wrote magnitude - you write 10 times - yea yea difference maybe, the point is something else Blind, without knowing what system I listened to - had, of course, help from my fiance (yes, she does now enough to handle both systems, she just hated one of them - and that is not the Meridian since it survived) Did you deafeat the dithering in the G68 to do an apples to apples comparison? The dithering in the G68 gives a "warmer" less detailed sound but also MUCH less fatiguing. Most likly no. I can't remember and I don't have the profile stored on my computer anymore (damn disc crash). From Your point of view, what settings would you recommend for PSM signal (that is G98DH for CDs and my SPDIF interface from SB3) ? I can try to make a new evaluation although I currently do not have access to any Benchmark DAC-1, but I guess I could buy the new DAC-1 Pre (with USB interface) just for the fun of testing. One way to compare would be to run the DSP outputs on your G68 into your DAC-1. Set the G68 to non 24/96 DSP speakers. Then you can compare the quality of the DACs based on the SAME inputs. Also be sure to use single ended on your DAC-1. Running a CD player into G68 with dithering and single ended vs the DAC-1 has way to many other variables to do a comparison of the DACs themselves. I have no DSP Speakers, nor will I ever get anyone If I would do a test, I would run a CD-drive (G98DH, SPDIF output) and SB3 to SPDIF input on the Benchmark DAC-1 Pre against the G68ADV (with MHR for G98 and SPDIF for the SB3) - lot of choices here, not to mention setup of the G68ADV properties. The Amps will be Meridian G-series, with active filter for the Infra system (bas). It's not so simple to explain, but let's say this: I have full respons from about 11Hz to +22kHz - of course with effects from the room. And by the way I would not use MRC for this, although I could of course... No G68 has been hardware upgraded yet. Just as I thought. I guess this, in a way, indicates that there might not be any upgrades for the hardware for the G68. It's a dead product from that perspective. Let's wait to get answers from John K on apodizing. We don't know what makes sense on apodizing filters yet. And a existing G68 may even get it, we don't know yet. Exactly. But without apodizing or any other upgrades the G68 is dead. Just as the G61R - just about all G-series are dead. You didn't understand how I explained to do an accurate comaparison of the DACs. You don't need DSP speakers to do it. In Fact, you MUST NOT have DSP speakers to compare the G68 DACs with your DAC-1. You were comparing apples and oranges. Generally 1 order of "Magnitude" means 10x. 2 Orders of "Magnitude" is 100x. If it's not that I have no idea what your "Magnitude" means. You didn't say order of Maganitude but I have no other way of interpreting the meaning.

I should have said "I would be happier", I would not have another box and more cables. What is the point of having a Modular system if there are no new modules. The 800 can switch analogue video, why not have it switch digital video as well (or these days instead of). Of course you are right, support for a Blu-ray drive (and a hard disk?) is what I suspect most other 800 owners want.

I do not understand the technical details, but if Bob says it's a problem, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm told the 808 is better than the 800 because there is no video. However the 800 already has video and HDMI so adding a HDMI switch to it should not be detrementaly to it. Plus it still keeps HDMI out of the 861 processor. I concure that Bob knows his stuff, but marketing and politics are very powerfull persuaders. I have an 800 that can decode DD and DTS but not from an external source, I have a 861 that can upscale, but even if I add the new HD621 I still can't decode DD to LPCM and let the 861 upscale it. It all seems a bit disjointed still. I guess that why I'm looking at a speaker upgrade and not at HD621 right now.

From my perspective, with enough space and sufficient shielding it should be possible even for a purist like Bob Stuart to put all things in one chassi.
But I think it's a faster and more convenient way for Meridian to do a separate switch. They can base their architecture on a present state of the art switch, they have plenty of space to do their thing in, and every processor from 568.2MM onwards can take advantage of Lossless HDMI Audio as well as a being a well M integrated HDMI switch.

I don't know much about it (as is the case with a lot of things), but shielding or the lack thereof may not be the problem. Somehow that sounds too easy.

How about space then? 568.2MM and G68 looked pretty crowded last time I checked.. Not to mention you would have to construct 3 different cards to get them in all 3 processors (568.2MM, G68 and the 861).

There is literally no space left in the 568.2MM for an additional circuit board or external jacks. I think you could swap out the component switching board or the composite/S-video switching board on the G68 and have room both inside the chassis and on the back panel for an HDMI solution.
