With the recent drop in Meridian G series prices, I am considering upgrading from a 500 based system to a G91. Looking at the Meridian site at: http://media.Meridian-audio.com/datasheets/MAL-brochure-specs.pdfonly the G91A is listed. I know other versions were made but I am unable to locate specs. Can forum members please provide a link to specs of other G91 versions and summarise the major differences between them? Does a non-A G91 exist? The G91 will be used in a simple 2 channel A/V system, with video output going direct from the G91 to a plasma display, and the 2 channel (I have not yet gone 5.1 channel) analogue audio will drive a pair of active non-Meridian speakers. At the moment I do not need digital outputs, but if room correction devices get cheaper in the future, digital outs would be useful to have. Similarly, DD and DTS decoded 5.1 outputs are not needed now, but would be nice to have. Also, can G91 owners comment on the reliability of the DVD drive in the G91 and parts availability? Have there been any known problems in reading discs as the drives age? Thanks in advance.

I've had my (2nd ;)) G91DH since just after its first release here in the UK and can report I've never had a problem with the drive mechanism or its ability to read discs.
Cheers
Simon

The only drive problem I have had with my G91 was a sudden desire not to play DVD's. All that was required to correct this was a power down, so no major issue there.
My 598 had to have the drive changed but frankly the cost of this wasn't worth worrying about, so no major issue there either.

Thanks for the info. Just curious, does the G91 use a computer DVD drive? Hello,

Thanks Jez. Looks like the G91 drive will last a while. How much did the replacement 598 drive replacement cost? The only drive problem I have had with my G91 was a sudden desire not to play DVD's. All that was required to correct this was a power down, so no major issue there.

Can't deny this is shameless self promotion as I'm selling one here...
1. No problems with disc since acquired April 2006 2. I ran S video out to a Sony LCD ...easy connection 3. Ran digital out 5.1 at first, then 5.0. Mostly CDs, a few DVDs. 4. Also played LPs through analog in 5. The new remote (MSR+)is a dream, far better than the older versions. 6. The on screen setup is very well designed. 7. Tried the tuner once and got good reception, clear as a bell
I think you're making a great choice!

Hi Taken from the G91 datasheet
"At the heart of the G91 is a high-speed computerstyle DVD-ROM drive - the best type of drive to use to ensure accurate data recovery from all types of disc,"

It's the same drive that's been in the 596, 598, G98, G91 (not sure about the 800's). Although there have been minor revisions. Some revisions have overlaped Meridian models. The big change is the new slot drives and only time will tell on those.

I suspect that's why Meridian players cannot play SA-CD. Has anyone opened their player to see what make/model of DVD ROM is used? Hi Taken from the G91 datasheet

Has anyone opened their player to see what make/model of DVD ROM is used? Yes, it has been discussed previously. Can't remember offhand, but if you search in either the 2006 (or 2007) forums, I think you'll find it there. Cheers George
