I do not like to brag, but I am sure I have more experience with code into the open than anyone else on this forum ... Maybe not, unless you narrow that down to music-related code...

How about a return to "Huge Meridian News today" or just start a new thread about (hopefully) the huge Meridian News from CES.

I agree with John's point. Its kind of like the M product itself, what you are paying for is not really the hardware, though its good bits, its the integration, the software, the artistry in balancing the attributes.

I do not like to brag, but I am sure I have more experience with code into the open than anyone else on this forum ... If you say so. Personally I've put a number of lines into a commercially released product spanning several versions. I just want to put things into perspective: you do not need millions to develop a music server system. However you do need motivation and enthousiasm ... maybe M lacks this? They seem to hold firm on to CD and DVD. That's great if you're one person developing everything. Not great when you're a number of people developing a product. Generally they're drawing a salary and having to deal with the nuisance of things like leases on a building or at least some type of work space, etc. Those have to be paid somehow. I have no idea what Sooloos' startup costs were but they do have to be amortized across the sales for the earliest products. I think it is extremely overpriced, but this is clearly my personal opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love their DSP speakers and surround processor ("Digital Theater" philosophy), but I have nothing with the stuff they bought. That's fine. Personally I can't afford a Sooloos system but I respect the effort it took to get the product out the door.

Maybe not x2. [/quote] For sure not x3, but it's not that important. The overall point is correct, there's little technical secret sauce in the Sooloos. Just good product (well, UI) design and some attention to detail. I work in the other end of the spectrum - mass market - it's a different world than the upfront costs spread over a small number of units. As John K said - the market will ultimately decide if it's overpriced or not.

I'm sure the most people who buy a Sooloos, could not case less what is actually inside the box.

Rant ON Guys, stop the pissing contest about coding will you The debate about whether a Meridian unit should cost what it does is utterly daft. There have always been other products at a fraction of the price that get within x% or y% of what M do. We always pay for that extra special 'thing'. What that 'thing' is varies but brand, exclusivity, design etc all play a big part on top of outright performance. 5k surround processors and 4k DVD players; 10k DVD players and processors. Many folks have always done DIY systems against these toys at a fraction of the cost. I also find a comparison to an after-market modded this/that/the other (no disrespect intended at all to those that provide such things) and a fully commercialised product sold via distribution channels, dealers etc is also not really valid. Totally different markets. Rant OFF
Rgds, Nick

Agreed Nick. I've been in IT Management for over 12 years and I personally hate computers and tinkering, so I use a Mac... why? Because it just works. I can definitely see the appeal of Sooloos, the same way Kaleidescape has captured their part of the market. I think at the level of investment most of us are willing to spend on M kit, Sooloos almost appears reasonable. It's all relative to your passion and where your financial focus is at any one time.
I say bring it on and let's see how much more impressive M can make it.
3x DSP5200 L, R and C (all vertical), 4x Triad Silver in-wall surrounds and 6x Triad Silver in-ceiling ATMOS speakers, Triad Silver subwoofer, Denon AVR-X8500H, JVC DLA-7500 4K projector and Screen Research 120" AT 2.35:1 screen. Apple TV 4K and Oppo UDP-203 Blu-ray player.

They should not say "ethernet" because it's not. There is going to be so much confusing with this. I hope they tested everything being plugged into a router doesn't hurt anything
