Is there ever going to be an update for any DVD players to allow 480i and 576i over HDMI ?.

Cheers,

Tony.

I believe that this has already been answered - 'NO'. The hardware architecture does not permit it.

Actually its perfectly worded for the question that I wanted answered. Does Trifield work properly with no centre speaker. I don't care about any other setup, I'm just interested in whether Trifield makes any sense without a centre speaker - that covers 2ch, 4ch and 6ch. Bob may well say that it will work properly if you have 3 or more speakers, irrespective of placement.

Is this definate ?. I have done a few searches and the only thing I can find that is close to being definate is the following from 2006:

'What is the possibility of enabling 480i/576i output on HDMI equipped DVD players (G9x and 800)?

Meridian Response:
The HDMI output is located after the video deinterlacer, and the lowest possible output at the moment is 480p. We think this gives the optimum result.'

This does seem to concur with what you are saying but the 'at the moment' bit seems to imply that maybe something can be done in software - perhaps something just as simple as turning off the deinterlacer and passing through the signal. I guess the scaler expects a progressive signal so this would probably need to be disabled too.

Cheers,

Tony.

If Meridian wanted to, I'm sure it could code for this in firmware. Also, the original question asked for an update to the players which could be in either hardware or software so, irrespective of the 2006 answer, it is still a valid question.

Sorry for trying to help get a clear answer on this. Others are interested as well and would like a clear answer. The question as worded may be heard as either. #1 "Does the Trifield algorithm that derives a center channel work with no center channel" Or it may be heard as #2 "With 4 or 6 speakers is the Trifield DSP Preset a unique and legitimate listening mode".

You can put in question #1 I'll put question #2. The point is technically with no center you may no longer be in "Trifield" and therefore "Trifield" is "not working properly". But it may still be a perfectly legit mode to listen in and enjoy.

I agree; question is still to date. Many of us own a video processor which for sure (at least in my case) performs better managing video.
Up to a certain extent, will help to give some fresh life again to some M players which otherwise rapid destiny is powder on the shelf. Moreover, I'm sure, M has only to gain from an appreciated move in this sense (of course it must be technically feasible, as I'm sure it is).

Meridian exhaustively test their DSP speakers and of course the room will have a major impact upon the sound. But have they established for each model minimum and optimum distances from back and side walls?

What is the optimum method for playing high res downloads through DSP speakers?

Meridian would have to specify not only distances but also what type of room (size/shape) and with what construction/treatments/etc, otherwise the recommendations would be pretty meaningless...

I agree with mark, there are too many variables. But Meridian does mention a min of 20 inches from a wall to qualify it not being a boundary.

What ever is optimal for plain old CD should be optimal for hi-res.

That would be very nice, but I don't see it happening. frown
