More info.....

I believe what the CLUX does is take the EDID of the sink and modify the audio EDID portion as needed based on how the switch on the CLUX is configured. To do this the CLUX needs to understand the EDID it is receiving. The CLUX appears to have problems with the JVC RS-1s EDID. Two people are either getting no audio (from HD-DVD players) or just L/R from their other sources with the chain of source->CLUX->RS1/HD1.

I was able to duplicate this here.

What I think is occurring is there is something in the JVCs EDID that the CLUX does not understand. As such I suspect it is just passing through the JVC EDID through un-modified which is causing the sources to act as they were since the JVC EDID is very unlikely to be broadcasting 6/8 channel LPCM support.

The Gefen DVI Detective + arrived today. I tried using its built in Mode 5 which basically gives up to 1080p60 video support and multiple audio formats including 8 channel LPCM.

With the Gefen in the chain I am getting multichannel audio from the HD-A35 where without it there was no audio before in the chain of A35->CLUX->RS1. You can make the chain A35->Gefen->CLUX->RS1 and get audio or A35->CLUX->Gefen->RS1 and also get audio. So this takes care of the EDID problem. This does not give 24p from the A35 though as I do not think the Mode 5 in the Gefen advertises support for 24p. The A35 has to explicitly see support for 24p to output it, it can not be forced.

So for the 24p issue as a test I had the Gefen learn the EDID I cooked up in the Radiance. This has support for mutlichannel LPCM audio, pretty much all video formats including 24p...etc...etc. After the Gefen learned the EDID I tried it both ahead/behind the CLUX with the A35 and was getting multi-channel audio as well as 24p from the A35. This demonstrates that the learning function of the Gefen does work as well as shows that the CLUX will pass 24p which is good to know. If the source can force 24p (PS3) the lack of support for 24p in the built in EDIDs of the Gefen is not an issue.

The one thing the Gefen does not do is act as a sink. The Gefen basically just passes the video data straight through, it doesn't even have HDMI receiver/transmitters in it. It is basically tied into the DDC line to intercept EDID messages from the sink and substitute its own message to the source instead while passing the HDCP communications through unaltered.

So for situations where the CLUX is having EDID problems with the sink the Gefen DVI Detective Plus looks like a good solution.
