Again, Bob demonstrates his deep understanding.
The thing about "virtually" is that most of us don't have the hardware/ears to make use of the "perfect" solution. Our kit doesn't have the frequency range required or the processing power. All that "extra resolution" is simply lost. Hence, unless we change out entire systems "virtually" is good enough.

Necessity breeds invention. Clearly the goal is now to make 16/44.1 sound as heavenly as possible, but I wonder whether the (very worthy) efforts into RBCD replay would have happened if DVDA had succeeded? Presumably the apodizing filter will work with all PCM formats, including DVD-A? Mark

Presumably the apodizing filter will work with all PCM formats, including DVD-A? On 48kHz, yes. The apodizing is built into the upsampling algorithm. If I've understood correctly, the time-smearing pre-echos are the result of low-pass linear phase digital filtering applied to 44.1/48kHz audio. At high-rate sampling, either the filtering isn't necessary as artifacts are beyond the range of human hearing, or else the pre-ringing isn't audible for the same reason.

If Meridian wants to stay in video spinner business they need a BD player announced at CES. Even upscale non geeks know it's crazy to only offer an $18k DVD player. And it would hurt installers reputation trying to go all Meridian solution. I suspect the thing that held up HDMI solution (getting MHR encryption approved) held up releasing a hd player.

Incidentally, at lunchtime today I found a small (but not trivial) Blu-Ray stand in my local Woolworths (in the UK, Woollies is a *downmarket* retailer that's in big financial do-do, so I was bargain-hunting). Surprising, but encouraging. Blu-Ray stands in many retailers now. If it fails, it will be a high profile failure.

Asda is also stocking a reasonable number of BluRays, some cheaper then the likes of Amazon/Play as well.

Just a thought I picked up from a Business Guru which is this.... "You're currently sending a very important 'hidden' message to your customers. That message is 'hidden' in your prices. Entrepreneurs think that setting their prices is all about how much profit you can make. Of course, that's true but your prices also tell your customer something of great significance. Your prices tell your customers how much you value yourself, your product and your service. There's gold in those 15 words so let me repeat them: Your prices tell your customers how much you value yourself, your product and your service. Higher prices, backed by effective Marketing, send a subliminal (and sometimes not so subliminal) message to your customers that you have great confidence in yourself and what you're selling. People are drawn to such confidence and certainty. If you doubt this, go take a trip to Harrods and just watch people and their buying behaviours". Meridian seem to fully understand this philosophy IMHO, Cheers, Chris NB Quotes taken from an E Mail by. Higher prices, backed by effective Marketing, send a subliminal (and sometimes not so subliminal) message to your customers that you have great confidence in yourself and what you're selling. People are drawn to such confidence and certainty. I don't think anybody here doubts this. It's why the M810 will sell. However, most of us here value fact above fiction and so want the genuinely best possible solution available within out budgets. Mark

And Meridian Believe they are giving this with what they do........ Perhaps... But I personally think it's a great example of the phenomenon you just pointed out. Deliver a good product and use the price to convince people it's a great product... Mark

I don't think it matters what a company thinks of itself if no one thinks the same! Even if you do think the same, if you don't have the money you won't buy the product! I'm sure every company thinks its worth what it charges for its product. Aston Martin are sure worth it but that won't keep people buying their products if they don't have the money and that is why they are laying people off!
