One major problem, as we have seen recently, is that most reviewers are stuck in the dominant (analog) model of reviewing an individual component in the context of a reference system of their own choosing.

That is not the Meridian way; the Meridian way is all about an integrated digital system. I may not be able to afford the higher end DSP speakers or 800 series kit, but boy does my all-digital system sound good!

Gianni, perhaps your colleague should have gone with the Dunhill? The F80 is more for those interested in design and visual wit, as well as the fantastic performance which itself is not just skin deep (as you know).

You should worry less as there are now proven non-Meridian solutions. smile

You also have to give Meridian credit for having the forethought so that we could !!!

How many folks are running 8 year old equipment and running pure lossless BD movies (e.g. 568). It's probably this same forethought that delayed Meridian's own "Hollywood approved" solution.

Is that forethought, or just a better, cleaner system architecture that the rest of the world is finally catching up with? If you can call HDMI catching up when compared with MHR.

It saddens me greatly whenever I switch HDMI sources and have to wait for five seconds or so for all of the handshakes to complete in my system. Botched really doesn't do it justice. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm now using HDMI for audio (and there's an irony), I would actually consider moving back to high quality component for seamless video switching.

I think most of us here are enthusiasts in one area or another with regard to Meridian Products.
We are not their most important customers though, although we would like to think we are.
A large majority of us probably cannot afford to buy new Meridian kit and are punching well above our wieght here.

We do a good job in funneling away second hand or ex dem stock to allow those who can afford to afford the very latest kit. (Meridians most important clients)

The advent of the internet is a major event that has allowed collectives such as ours to come to the attension of Meridian, and they probably look at us with some dissbelief.

A large group of highly knowledgable people who, support, challange, promote, critisize, gossip, share knowlege and anything else you can put as name to, about Meridian and anything they say, dont say or do. (I think that sentance makes sense if you read it slowly).

On the whole I think they like us, we give honest feedback in a way that perhaps was not available in earlier times.
Its not always what they want to hear, but I bet they are listening.

But we are not their main target audiance when it comes to business stratergy, we simply, in the most, cant afford it!!

This of course may change in the future but i hav'nt got a chrystal ball to gaze into.

Cheers, Chris smile

True and, unfortunately, it reflects the dominant view of the readership. Another problem, at least for me, is that if I had a complete Meridian system (I have just the 861), it would require Herculean efforts to test/evaluate non-Meridian components in a familiar context. After all, a fully digital Meridian setup is the ultimate HTIB. whistle

Asa

Do you not think that the reason they do not review Meridian is because the vast majority of readers, who are also representative of the market do not want to spend that much money. And as such have no interest in buying the magazine to read about Meridian. The extra 150 sales the magazine gets from us guys when they review Meridian don't really make all that much difference! And we PDF it and put a link to the review so we don't need to buy it anyway!

Everyone knows, including these magazines that to survive you need to appeal to the majority. If you want to appeal to the minority then that`s fine, but don't try and run your business like the majority guys, stick with what you know and do best!

It would be worth the effort. Then you could buy the review sample!

Heres the thing. I'm not happy to be negative. Its just how I see it. I think while M have weathered storms in the past we should remember the line about past performance and how its not a guarantee of future success. In the past Meridian had a real advantage over its competitors- eg- back when the 861 came out- how many other processors were doing true discrete 5.1. Now I can get that in a $300 receiver- and while I would not compare the two, for $300 the result, when considered in historic context, is pretty good. Same thing for when they did the MCD1. The mass market isn't listening to CDs nor do they care about upsampling or any of the things we appreciate and list as advantages. And they can get the broad strokes elsewhere.

Best regards,
Jerry
