I've joined - hopefully, with support, artists will be given the choice to have their music presented squashed or with the dynamics it should have. I hope we see a return to lower average dB levels soon.

Laudable as this is, music today is mixed to be listened to in the car and on the move (by iPod). This pretty much dictates the dynamic range which is used.

The number of people who turn on Radio 3 and think their radio has failed due to the almost inaudible music is very large.

Great, I signed up, the Demo video on the home page is a great explanation.

Cheers, Chris smile

I've signed up, too. I'd like to see them name and shame recordings with poor dynamic range as well as certify good ones.

Malcolm - I agree with you about Radio 3, but it can always be compressed at the receiver if the listener wants it. The stereo in my old Jag even has a setting to let me compress CDs (which, too be fair, can help with such a large amount of background noise - perhaps Lexi don't need compression!). (Alan Partridge joke for the unitiated - the plural of Lexus - Lexuses, Lexi?)

I think that DAB has a metadata stream for compression (like Dolby Digital), again, giving the listener the choice.

For the moment, I'm making this a sticky topic as it is in all our interests.

What's the best app to use (prefereably freeware) to see the audio spectrum (like in the video).

I'd like to test a few discs that I have to see if they look like they sound and whether what I think is dynamic compression actually is.

Nick
