Not new music exactly but I just picked up Tres Hombres / ZZ Top in remastered form. Haven't had chance to test vs my original copy, but, it's a fine sounding 1973 album. Sounds really clean and in the room. Pretty cheap at Amazon too.

Putting a smile on my face this morning

For those who like Ramsey Lewis, a UK label Rev-Ola, which is a division of Cherry Red Records Ltd, has two CD's out: "The Ramsey Lewis Trio 1960-65" and "The Ramsey Lewis Trio 1965-67". Both are Lewis at his best, before he became too mellow and started covering standards for a living. The sound quality is very good, especially for the times. Some of the cuts were recorded at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, Calif, a great jazz club where I spent more than a few Saturday afternoons in my college days. Both CD's are highly reccommended.

Hi all, Just a heads up for BBC Alba on Freesat and probaly Sky in the UK.

I have just dipped in and out during Add breaks and discovered some really well sorted Live music of the Celtic Traditional variety.

If thats your bag, and even if not, its well worth a look.

What I have seen is very well recorded and filmed in an authentic fashion.

Your invited to the Folk club you could never get to....

Enjoy some surprises, Chris smile

Andrea Bocelli / Verdi / DVDA

"Only" a 48/20 recording, but it's no surprise that Richard Bates (Meridian UK Sales Manager) uses it as a demonstration disc. Track 3 - La Donna Mobile - is breathtaking with DSP speakers and pretty darn good through my Dell PC speakers!

Only if you can tolerate the singing.

Kal, I would never recommend a disc on technical merit alone. If you don't like Bocelli, that's fine. This is my recommendation...

Lots of music on BD lately. Where The Light Is - live in LA - John Mayer &al is a quite enjoyable performance. And Scorsese's Rolling Stones flick is a treat, even if it didn't quite meet my expectations.
And there's ZZ Top of course - gorgeous image but the DD5.1 track definitely lacks in punch ; I liked the 2ch LPCM sound much better.

For Live Blues/rock fans I can highly reccomend "Joe Bonamassa's" Live from nowhere in particular double CD set. (PRD 7248 2)
A neighbour lent it to me and I have just played disc one.

The Music is blistering and the sound quality is amongs the best I have heard on CD.

I will be buying this disc, I could easily rip it, but music this good needs proper appreciation. Worth paying for.

Enjoy, blues fans, Chris smile

Just a coda to this. I heard another recording of La Donna Mobile today that I felt was lifeless and which left me completely unmoved (unlike my recommendation). I didn't recognize the tenor; it turned out to be Bocelli... laugh

My recommended recording (link in quote) is a world away from this other not recommended version by Bocelli, Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (Philips / 4761310).

I don't know if we should be extending this discussion but your experience speaks clearly of Bocelli's lack of discipline and training. He has a great natural voice (although a small one) but he sings like a pop singer. Clearly, many find him enjoyable and, perhaps, the recording you reference is a sonic delight. For others of us, Bocelli is to be avoided. I find him painful to listen to.

There is a very good Decca DVDA of assorted opera arias sung by Renee Fleming. Sound quality is better in my opinion than the Bocelli disc and Renee is of course the real deal. still widely available in the UK via Amazon, although the suppliers are mostly from the USA. I have found Caiman to be pretty good.

Also very impressed by Julia Fischer's hybrid SACD of the Bach partitas and sonatas for solo violin. I can only play the CD part but it sounds very clean and natural, and the playing is quite compelling.

Here in Leicester classical music (now labelled 'specialist music' in the tiny section reserved for it one big music store!) has all but disappeared from the high street and shopping centres. I suppose it doesn't sell much, which is a sad indictment of our culture, but the online shopping has never been better and the choice remains huge.

I wonder how many Meridian owners regularly buy or play or tune into (or attend or perform)classical music? That might be worth a new thread somewhere.
