Mark_H - pls help calibrate "sound is good but not exceptional". Sanjay, I've not heard the F80 so cannot make a direct comparison. I do have a number of portable stereos and the Boom competes very well against them except in terms of absolute volume, which is much lower on the Boom. It's certainly a very nice portable stereo system but I would never use it for critical listening but rather as a device that was on in the room while I was doing something else... Happy to answer specific questions. Cheers, Mark

It seems a really good way of leveraging an existing Squeeze setup, but I do want reasonable bit rates for Radio2 and ClassicFM (yeah yeah, I know). Perhaps I should re-phrase this... Is anyone listening to these stations using a Squeeze device? If so, what bit-rates are you getting? Thanks, Joel

Joel,
I do listen to radio, though the current 7.3 firmware of Squeezecenter seems to have broken AlienBBC (a constant problem with squeezecenter upgrades breaking plugins). Cannot say what the bit rates are but sound is perfectly adequate for non-critical listening.

Joel For BBC UK national radio, live radio is currently only available in Windows Media Player and Real Player. Current bitrates are up to 64k (Real uses a multiple bitrate). Some Windows Media streams are not available outside the UK (as a rule of thumb, 5 and higher are available). More streaming formats will be available shortly; including an increase to the current streaming formats. I'd recommend using the Windows streams where you can. The highest quality is actually hidden away at www.bbc.co.uk/multicast if your network is capable of that. Finally, watch www.bbc.co.uk/radio/labs for the latest news; by the end of October there'll be plenty of changes.

I just picked one up today at the local PCWorld store. Have to say it a nice little unit. Installs just the same as the SB in <1minute. Sounds perfect for its application....bedside. AlienBBC works fine so that's all set for alarm clock duty. Music sounds heaps better than the previous bedside thing. No - of course it's not F80 sound, but it was 200 and will do just fine for 06.00 each day.

Perfect mini-review Nick. I think I may well get one for the bedroom too...
