Once again, we're back to Meridian's ability to "do the right thing" with respect to clocking and jitter reduction coming out of the decode.

Timing has nothing do to with decoding (or decompressing) an audio format, so there is no such thing as 'clocking' and jitter coming out of the decode. What comes out of the decode is just a block of bytes that you can compare to the bytes that come out of a 'stock solution'. They should be identical. If not, one (or both) of the implementations is wrong. Sorry guys, no magic here !

You're either feeding an SPDIF output (with or without MHR) or a DAC. So it is entirely relevant.

Mr. Kotches:

Could you elaborate on what you mean by the codecs being deterministic? Is this as opposed to stochastic?

Cheers, Ian

What John means is that, although the codecs are lossy, all *correctly implemented* decoding algorithms will produce identical output.

Obviously I disagree. The output stage has nothing to do with the decoding stage, so timing is not relevant to the decoding stage. There is no such thing as timing and jitter in the audio data during the decoding.

so here we are...the folks who buy the stuff....Meridian says nothing...my audio/HT buddies indicate that Meridian is close to unsaleable...what are these clowns doing....bottom line they seem focused on making expensive clock radios...gee the Ferrari and now the Dunhill....so much for their core customers....

Anyone who has had any dealings with the people at Meridian will know they are NOT clowns. They may be frustrating by refusing to talk about future products and not jumping on every passing bandwagon but their real commitment to customers and their years of support for the products they do produce are invaluable to me.

As George says, Meridian do say a lot, especially to us via John Kotches' Q & As, if you don't like what they say or they don't say what you want to hear then that's another issue.

What was said by Bob Stuart (my highlights):

1) The latest D8ks have apodizing upsampling, SpeakerLink, time-aligned drivers, and improved FIFO buffering. Everything apart from SpeakerLink (I think) is upgradable via firmware.

2) Meridian does plan to roll out the apodizing upsampling to its processors, but there is a lot of testing to do. We should expect updates for some (most?) of the 96/24 DSP speakers by year end.

3) Meridian does not consider Linn to be a legitimate competitor. I think this is a serious point regarding Meridian's positioning.

4) DVD-A support in the 800 is expected to continue.

5) Meridian will consider a USB card swap for the G68. A USB card won't be offered for the 861v4, but one was certainly not ruled out for v5.

6) G6x and G9x products all come from a similar microcontroller code base (G6x and G9x are respective trees). Consequently "fixes should propagate across as they are made available. Meridian has no intent of abandoning these products while the core platforms are in production or active development".

7) Unlike some other high-end manufacturers, for audio quality reasons, Meridian is fundamentally opposed to adding HDMI inputs to its processors.

8) "There will be a way to feed HDMI audio into the processors, details are not releasable."

As a G68 owner, points 2, 5, 6 and 8 are superb news.

From CEDIA, we also have a fair idea of the likely HDMI solution (HDMI-to-MHR processing box), timescale (Q1 2009) and rumoured cost ($2500). Bob did state that Meridian's intention was to produce a solution which is "better, cheaper and friendlier to both new and existing customers".

I think what was said by Meridian is substantial enough to indicate that G68 owners etc are not going to be abandoned. VK's post is a reasonable summary albeit with elements of good solid speculation. Q1 2009 isn't long to wait to see if the HDMI aspects have any substance.
