The HDMI Box converts to digital lossless codecs from the HDMI output to MHR so that you can input them directly into the multi-channel digital inputs of your G68, eliminating the analog section of your Blu-ray player and the extra D/A - A/D steps, the result of which is better sound. That is why everyone is excited about the HDMI Box. That sounds more like bitstreaming. My understanding is that the player decodes the lossless to pcm and transmits that over the hdmi connection to this new box. Considering the box has multiple hdmi inputs, it's going to be used for more than a blu-ray player. What would be nice is if this box decoded legacy dd/dts and forwarded multichannel pcm to the processor. That would allow upsampling (and in the future the adopizing filter) in the processor. It would add more value to this box to support upsampling of cable/sat, the old dvd player, whatever else. You're correct. I guess I didn't choose my words carefully enough. Perhaps I should have said "extracts the multi-channel LPCM stream from the HDMI output and makes it available so that it can be transmited over MHR directly to the multi-channel digital inputs of the G68/861." Sorry for the confusion.

I'm unclear why anyone would want to put a PC so close to their audio equipment when Ethernet or WiFi is so simple to use, fast and packet based (doesn't contribute to jitter or other sonic degradation). Sonos, Squeezebox, Airport Express... all the way up to the Linn network players - each of these is a reasonable solution that avoids the inherent noise (physical and electrical) of a local PC. You mean the packets that can arrive out of order, out of sequence and significantly seperated in time? What was jitter's definition anyway? It's not a problem unless you need to synchronize with video or with other network nodes (i.e. another pair of speakers, but is doable within a few milliseconds). Out of order packets are buried in the network stack implementation and not seen by user code. Time is handled by reasonable buffering for the given application. Out of order packets also only happens with multiple redundant routes (pretty rare within a home network). Jitter is not an issue until you switch to a non packet based protocal (i.e. SPDIF).

George, You have to assemble the stream and send it to wherever is next with high precision or jitter will be a factor. In the end, the final assembly point must clock as there is no embedded clock within the TCP packets. Cheers,

I'm adding the M HDMI audio box to my system as soon as it's available. If an input device such as a PS3, BR or SACD has only one HDMI output connected to the M HDMI box, how should HDMI video be delivered over HDMI to a monitor? This isn't an issue with 800v4. MHR SPDIF to 861, HDMI to monitor. Thanks in advance.

Are these speculations going to continue for months until we see the reality?

We've been going on about this for quite some time already... Why stop when we're having fun?

In the end, the final assembly point must clock as there is no embedded clock within the TCP packets.
Cheers, Agreed it eventually has to get carefully clocked into a DAC. That doesn't prevent the initial transmission from being ethernet. Reassembling, buffering and reclocking is peanuts. Slim Devices, Solos etc. have proven it works quite well. Managing more than two channels with say one ethernet link per pair is a challenge but quite doable.

Frank & Steve,
Thanks, that is exiting: I can get the higher quality signal from the BR via HDMI to the new HDMI box and output from the box via the 3 Meridian Blue wires to the second set of multi-channel digital inputs on the G68. Now I am also interested in this box even thought I haven't a clue about most of what everyone is talking about. But how do I get the video via HDMI to the plasma as the BR has only one HDMI output?
Sorry my level of technical understanding is not even in your ballpark, but I do like awesome Meridian sound.

Jitter is not an issue until you switch to a non packet based protocal (i.e. S/PDIF). So by this premise, HDMI, being packet based (as the audio is packed within the data island each video frame), should not suffer from jitter?

In 2006/7 the pressure was for HDMI 1.1/1.2 to play back DVD-A and SACD from lesser players (than G or 800). We said we wanted to wait, we were right. Had we sold you that it would need upgrading again. Is there any difference in multi channel PCM going over a 1.1 or a 1.3 link ?

Tim PDX and Dolf. *If* this HDMI-to-MHR box is indeed Meridian's solution, there will almost certainly be an HDMI pass-through for video.

Is there any difference in multi channel PCM going over a 1.1 or a 1.3 link ? I believe not. 1.2a is required for DSD (SACD) over HDMI and 1.3b (or maybe 1.3a) is required for HD audio bitstreams. Edit: When I say no differences, no doubt there are some metadata differences in the spec. However, functionally, 1.1 is capable of multi-channel PCM.
