I do not have the same faith on the video front... But surely Meridian makes the best DVD players?

[quote=Mark_H]I understand your concerns, but in reality there is much in common between the processing of digital video and digital audio. Meridian's reputation with digital audio is second to none, and innovations like the apodizing filter show they are still pushing ahead. I've yet to see any unique and usable innovation in the video field from them... which might go towards justifying the cost of the M810. Meridian's expertise in the latter has served them well in the video arena and I look forward to seeing what they can contribute here. A projector with 4x the resolution of standard HD along with their 72 Hz interpolation technology, might produce some stunning and incomparable images. Personally I don't see interpolation being successful - it must introduce visible motion artefacts and is therefore of no interest in a setup concerned with absolute fidelity to the source - all you need is 48Hz/60Hz support in a projector and you're sorted. That requirement might change if we get 3D software. 4K resolution is really not needed until we have 4k sources. Although a 4K 2.35:1 panel which allowed us to remove the need for an anamorphic lens would be a welcome innovation in the projector arena. So again, a 4K panel doesn't justify too much excitement right now. So what exactly does the M810 offer us above the cream of the crop 1080p projectors in terms of genuine improvements to justify the extra $120k or so which it would cost to buy? Mark

Mark You can sit at one foot distance from the screen without seing any screendoor effect. That must be the main selling point.

I was a big sceptic until I spent over two hours viewing the 810 this week (see my thread for further comments). This level of performance will be available for less in the future, but that is the natural progression of all digital projectors. For the person who can afford it now, I do not believe you would regret the purchase from a performance viewpoint. The person who uses a CI often times does not swap out equipment for quiite a while. This kind of projector would make sense for them, again if they can afford it.
I would also comment that the projector makes more of a difference with really large screens. Since it can light up to 24 foot screen widths at 16 foot lamberts and has 10 million pixels, a fifteen foot screen width and up would be spectacular. What is on the market that can light up screens that big, with 10 million pixels and the extensive tweaking done on the picture by William Phelps?

The M810 is a light cannon. It's got either 2000 or 4000 lumens, I can't quite remember which. Coupled with the fact that it's a high contrast, Phelps calibrated, projector, I can see that there is a niche market for it. But I'm no expert at this end of the market. I'm assuming that at $185k, you have a few options. But surely Meridian makes the best DVD players? The best *sounding*... well at least until the new codecs came along... There was much sarcasm in my post. I wouldn't dispute the fact that Meridian make the best sounding players though. But for video, we know you can do better. I had Gordon Fraser round yesterday evening (UK Lumagen distributor, calibration legend, and a really nice guy) and even he was taken aback at how good the Star Wars PAL DVD looked with my Oppo 980 / Radiance / JVC HD1 chain. Indeed, it is an incredible transfer and the upscaled result was scarily close to, if not better than, a number of the poorer HD transfers I've seen. The Oppo + Radiance combo is, of course, less $$$ than the cheapest Meridian DVD player. Sound decoded in my G68 is rather good too...

Highly recommended to anybody who can use his services in the UK. Mark

The M810 is very expensive- no doubt. But so are the 800, the 861 and the 8000s- they are the flagship products. I take it as good news that M is refocusing on the high end. There will be trickle down products of course. If one has the kind of money to afford these I think they would be fairly safe with an M810 for several years if it is truly that spectacular.
best regards, Jerry

Were you referring to this: Well the demo was marred by a less than ideal screen that they apparently had rented, and which showed up with more folds than an origami chicken. The masking frame was jagged and uneven, there were visible creases every foot or so, and the optical characteristics of the screen itself were less than ideal. Sheeesh!
