The box to the right of the 800 is their hard drive based HD video source - it's what Meridian usually uses at shows for HD content.

Actually, you can use it for video (and it's been used in image processing for some time). It would be symmetrical, though, and probably embedded with scaling - if needed (which is sort of an upsampling, too). Ringing is an issue there too ...

The blurb says they showed high definition content. What was the source? I don't see anything but the 800 as a source. If no HDMI source was used, it is unlikely the unidentified box is OUR box. The hometheaterhifi.com write up mentions Patton was used in the demo - a title I am not aware of another HD source being available outside of the recent Blu-ray (if there were such a thing those screenshot whores making noise about the Blu-ray version's encode at AVS would have no doubt already sourced screencaps from alternative sources for comparison). I found an AVS report on the projector demo here that does say that all the media was coming from hard disc however, so if they were using any BD material they might well have been a big naughty and ripped it.

Now I see what happened to my thread- I wondered where it went- thanks for consolidating.
I think its very easy to criticize someone who goes out and gets what the CI recommends- but- consider that in this case the person doing the purchasing is probably not knowledgeable nor wants to be nor has the time to be. Its no different than relying on a decorator or other professional to help guide you. Yes, the money for this is HUGE and when you consider all the maladies in this world you might say its perverse, but consider what you have spent on DVDs, electronics and ask if it would be better served to charity. I think if someone has the money and they want to get the best, well, I think you could do a lot worse than Meridian. If the reviews- and Mark W is someone whom though I've never met, I trust his opinion 100%- are to be believed- this projector is absolutely worth it. Its the kind of thing you could buy and it will be relevant for probably 10+ years. Maybe at some point a change to the VP is in order but the projector itself seems pretty robust in its capabilities.
I think Meridian should next sell a Meridian branded 2.35 plasma or LCD panel.
Btw- back to the charity thought- whose to say the person buying these toys is not charitable- or maybe they are entirely greedy. Its up to the person, the toys don't matter in this case. So I am just happy that these things exist and there are people out there pushing the boundaries.
best regards, Jerry

From talking to Ken at the showing of the M810 I saw, Jerry's comments above are right on. The Meridian enthusiasts that post to this forum are not the entire market that Meridian sells to. There is a part of the population that could care less about all of the technical stuff us enthusiasts thrive on. They just want to pay their money to a CI and have it work. There is nothing wrong with that and it is their choice to make. I could never personally imagine affording a projector such as this. If you could afford it, however, you would be getting something truly exceptional. You would own something you could leave in place for many years and simply enjoy, knowing you are at the pinnacle of performance. Similar to how I feel about my 861 after owning it over ten years now.
BTW, I appreciate the compliment Jerry. I have always enjoyed your postings over the years and find you to be a well thought out voice of reason on the forum. I remember the postings you did showing off your theater. Very tastefully done room and equipment to die for.

You would own something you could leave in place for many years and simply enjoy, knowing you are at the pinnacle of performance. You'd only be at the pinnacle of performance (and that is questionable until we have in-depth testing) for a relatively short time and at a very high relative cost to other current top consumer projectors. It's great to see Meridian releasing a product *before* the competition for a change, but the competition is certainly working on their own solutions and will bring them to market at significantly lower prices and probably even better specs. I personally , preferred when M made an announcement , posted a ( provisional ) Data Sheet and then had their clandestine demos to gauge reaction / performance . If M believe there are only 2 types of customer , ie. geek/non-geek then they could , for once , please all the people all the time by being a bit more open with information. One type of customer wont care , the other will debate minutely and at great length the possible subtexts involved . Sorry to be OT , but unless my 6 numbers line up properly on Lotto night I wont be having Mr. Phelps over for tea That puts me firmly in the ' geek ' sector I believe ~M~
Mostly harmless. Comfortably numb.

Mark W, thanks for the compliment. This is how I feel about my 861 and 8000s. While many of the 861s capabilities are now being competed with in the market place for less money, I've been enjoying the 861 for 9 years now- and the 8000s for 5 years. Mark H, I do not think the competition will get anywhere near this for many years. How long have anamorphic lenses, motorized sleds, and the software in the VP to adjust for this been available? We still don't see too many turn key solutions in the market and those that are are still expensive. I agree technology usually comes down in price, but the sweet spot in the market is still getting into 1080P- I think we have many many more years of that. I can see other high end players doing something similar but my guess is their pricing will have to be close. The projectors that are more affordably priced, like the JVC ones, are really fantastic but this is just a different world. Interesting that Meridian is doing this at the time that Runco was sold and I personally am unsure of how their products will be affected (could be they are fine- could be they are in trouble). Manus, whether you are an M Geek or not This is a great thing to know about because the technology will eventually trickle down. 10 years from now you might not have Mr. Phelps over for tea but you might see the benefits of his work in your Meridian F1080 super awesome projector. best regards, Jerry
