Shipment of the Gefen unit is delayed until late June at the earliest.

I'd be happy with a Price and schedule by then.

Well although my room treatment upgrades aren't quite complete, they've progressed far enough to get my big rig back together and running. Soooo, The moment you've all been waiting for with bated breath... laugh My impressions of a Switch-box.com modded HD-XA2!

I did a head-to-head comparo between the modded Toshiba via 3x 2m lengths of Blue Jeans Belden 1694A/Canare cable and my 598DP via 3x 1.5m lengths of Stereovox XV2 cable. The two players were run into the appropriately configured MD1 and MD2 inputs on my 861's IE42 card. Each benefited from a dedicated Foundation Research LC-1 line conditioner power cord and each rested on a DIY Corian Brightstar-style sandbox within my Target gear racks. Additionally, the 598 benefits from a trio of BDR (Black Diamond Racing) pucks n' cones between it and the sandbox's "floating" top plate. Output levels between the players were matched with the aid of my RS SPL meter.

I've been purchasing HD movies like crazy for a couple of months, replacing old favorites with HD-DVDs or Blu Rays. I used a couple of guys-who-like-movies faves, The re-issued, re-mastered Bladerunner, Smokin' Aces, and We Were Soldiers for the comparisons I chose a few of the most bombastic scenes from each movie along with some strait dialog driven scenes, noting chapter and time and then switching back and forth between the players pretty quickly.

Long story short, the 3x SPDIF HD player is fantastic. Despite the 598 being equipped with the (arguably) better cables and a set of additional isolation feet which have previously proven themselves, the Toshiba's HD-Audio was consistently superior to that of the upsampled DD soundtrack from the 598. Both during the sis-boom-bah stuff and the quieter moments, you could simply hear more stuff going' on which drew you further into the movie. My only gripe would be with the Toshiba's remote. It was much maligned by reviewers and users alike and if ya meet one you'll immediately understand why! Otherwise I'm totally pleased with both the Toshiba player and Shawn's hot-rodding thereof. If the alleged Meridian HDMI-to-MHR switching solution doesn't materialize within the next 6 months or so, I'll be replacing the 60Gig PS3 with a modded stand-alone Blu-Ray player. Thank you Shawn!

Happy Trails!

Shawn:

Are there any Blu-ray players that can be modified with you 3xS/PDIF board?

Frank,

I haven't had any Bluray players here yet. Any player with internal decoding and 6/8 channels of analog outputs very likely could be modded though.

Thanks,

Shawn
