In its own 861 data sheet, Meridian claims that the 861 has "a memory-based de-jittering system that renders the processor almost entirely immune to input-signal quality". Presumably this applies to the G68 too.
Meridian makes
exactly the same "claims" about the FIFO Buffering in the Speakers, which if accepted at face value, makes the basis of this thread null and void.
However, even a simplistic "reading between the lines" of the various claims, FAQ's and Interviews given by Meridian over the years, shows that they also do not believe that just having ONE stage of FIFO Buffering in the Speaker alone, will lead to optimal replay in an all digital system
IIRC, the G98 doesn't upsample and I don't think it outputs RBCD using MHR.
The G98 will PLAY both 44/16 RBCD and 96/24 Material. It can also encrypt both these Stream types into MHR on BOTH the Main and Aux Outputs of the Player. (A sometimes hidden advantage of the G91 over the G98 is that it will Upsample 44/16 RBCD material)
Although producing sources with low jitter is a good thing and makes for the best compatibility with the widest range of partnering equipment, jitter does not affect digital processing and can, in fact, be minimized/removed at ANY stage prior to the DAC
If you believe in the "Any" part of the above statement, then surely the FIFO Buffer in the Speaker would be the best placed and most efficient place to remove Jitter. As regards your statement of "jitter does not affect digital processing", I feel that Meridian would disagree with you quite strongly
I think your basic Hypothesis of this thread is that the FIFO Buffering in the 861/G68 is more
"Effective" than that in the Speakers. This is something I agree with and something Meridian have been saying subtly for years
What I believe Meridian have been Stressing, is that the FIFO Buffering in their Players is even more "Effective" again than that in their Processor. And this combined with RE, Upsampling and of course, MHR Encryption / Data Transfer, leads to superior replay, even with a Meridian Processor and Speakers in the chain
I believe these are Meridian's claims. The individual user can decide on their validity
