Yes.
I have a lot of singles, EPs and LPs that yet haven't been released on CD (or if they have, are recordings off of vinyl in a lot worse shape than mine, played on inferior equipment), so I couldn't do without a turntable, a Rega Planar 25 with a Micro Benz something or other.

Top of the range Avid with their large power supply sounds fantastic but is hugely expensive. I have not had a deck since I sold my Linn years ago to move into Meridian digital. No doubt many would be pleased with my old vinyl collection but it is too heavy to post and would take ages to catalogue. And who knows if it is still playable?

This is the only reason I keep my turntable...

When I moved to Meridian (G08+DSP5200) about 18 months ago, I bought a Behringer ADC and a Cambridge phono stage to run the LP12/Ekos/Klyde through the Meridian system. It sounded poor compared to CD replay, so I decided to sell all my vinyl (30yrs worth) and replace it with CD. Fortunately, I chanced on the demo of a Gyro SE, it looked and sounded very good. I sold the LP12 for silly money, bought the Gyro SE/Technoarm/DL160 and still had money left over! The vinyl now sounds great and I didn't have the bother of replacing it.

Regards,

Tillman

PS CD is still played much more than the vinyl.

Ýes playing vinyl, Rega P9. Sounds great through the AD conversion of my G68 and DSP5200. Of course I have always doubts when it is not analogue all the way but now I have accepted the setup. It sounds good.

Still buying vinyl. Cannot resist signing up when they release jazz series like the Fantasy45 series and the Music Matters series. Vinyl is some therapy for me that I always go back to. It's not all about the music it's more of the mechanics with vinyl and a lot of tweaking. It's much more fun than fiddling with a mouse on a music server or pushing a button on a remote.

I would love an accepted high resolution digital format that starts releasing series like the vinyl series I mentioned above. Then my vinyl buying days would be over.

Anyway I would say that I play CD and music server about 90% of the time but I will not give up vinyl. It's to much fun for me smile

So more great memories restored from comments above by Frangos, Gianni, and Mr M.

I should have said I play the Technics thru Meridian 101b into a G91A. With a cheap Grado, it's a nice easy sound and maybe I will boost the cartridge a bit.

I bought the Lynn from Howard after seeing his ads and getting the idea about Subjective Audio. But I didn't buy Meridian from him. In 1980, I'd also seen ads for Swallow Acoustics, a startup owned/run by Mike Stevenson (Stephenson?)He had rented space at The Old School, Huntingdon. My wife and I met him in his "demo" room and compared his Swallow actives to Meridan M10s. He used Meridian M101/105s for power. No contest. We bought the Swallows and Meridians from Mike and eventually brought them home to USA. Now they're gone too, except for the 101b. So thanks Mike, and wouldn't it be great if you're out there, too!

When I picked up the Swallow speakers (Mike kind of made them on order), he needed a cable for the amps so we drove over to the Meridian plant just down the road. We walked in, he said hi to some guys and said he needed a cable and they said sure Mike...and that was that. Hope Meridian have boosted their security a bit since those good old days.

Last point...Mike used two LPs in his convincing demo. One was Gordon Giltrap and I can still hear the drums moving across the sound stage; the second, Sally Oldfield and her soprano just jumped out of the Swallows. I have LPs of both and they are pretty mellow on Meridian DSP6000s now! And I prefer the Lps to the CD versions on Meridian gear.

Well, now that you got me going, I am bound to ask: Any suggestions for a good cartridge to begin using my Thorens TD160BC? The arm is the Hadcock unipivot design - anyone remember it? Could the 861 take the output of the cartridge directly?

Any suggestions/ideas more than welcome!

Frangos, you need either:

IA30 Phono Input Moving Coil: 1 pair unbalanced on RCA (IA00 required)
IA35 Phono Input Moving Magnet: 1 pair unbalanced on RCA (IA00 required)

On the main system, Linn Lp12, Ittok, Adikt, Graham Slee era gold V pre-amp, into g91DH, plays back the new Porcupine Tree album much better than the standard CD, but not as good as the DVD-A...
Upstairs, Rega 2, with arm rewire, new counterweight, goldring 1042, into Crimson 620/640 monoblocks, Quad 11's, (budget system, ie cost less than 900)...
