That would indeed be a miracle.

Mark,

"Low noise floor makes a huge difference. "

Agreed.

"Measured mine using Earthworks M30BX mic, 1021 ZDT pre-amp and TrueRTA."

I will have to try that at some point. I have TrueRTA and the ETF mic/pre-amp but never used TrueRTA for SPL since it has to be calibrated every time you use it for SPL.

I believe TrueRTA remembers the SPL level if you don't change things between sessions? If not, it's not too difficult to set up.

Mark,

It might but it would be pretty easy for a mixer setting in windows to get altered which would through off the calibration. Likewise my mic pre-amp is just a rotary dial for on/off and input level so it would not be in exactly the same position every time it was used which would also throw off the SPL calibration. I have always just used TreuRTA for relative differences, not absolute measurements.

Will the Meridian accept/decode bitstream on its 3x SPDIF inputs? I thought it was basically expecting PCM when configured in that manor?

With my board tapped into the signal feeding the DACs you get PCM output all the time. If one really wanted bitstream for DD/DTS it would be easy enough to simply use the players stock SPDIF output into another input on the Meridian for that.

"One thing I like about my XA1 player is it will take a True HD track and downsample it to DTS 1.5 so it works over SPDIF to the 861. Sounds great when compared to the standard DD track."

Sounds better when you don't lossy recompress the lossless track at all though. wink

Shawn

That's the problem. The player will only ever send PCM to those DACs that get tapped so you'll never see any encoded data over them (so whether the Meridian can deal with encoded material over 3xSPDIF is moot in this context).

And yes you can use the auxiliary SPDIF output available on all players but you usually have to configure where your audio is to be sent (Analog Outputs, SPDIF or HDMI). Maybe some players simultaneously output to both, that would be ideal and great for comparisons.

Right. So you'd just need to do the SPL calibration prior to your noise floor reading. A little extra work, but nothing too onerous. Generally speaking I also use TrueRTA for relative work and then calibrated SPL is not a concern.

Background noise is measured according to NC22.

I guess you are right on this.... just make sure the DD decoder is good then.

best regards,
Jerry

I'd have to check some HD players to be sure but for plain jane DD/DTS I'd be surprised if the player couldn't have analog outputs active and send bitstream DD/DTS out its SPDIF output at the same time. Regular DVD players with analog outputs have been doing that for a very long time. They just pipe the bitstream to the SPDIF transmitter while also decoding that format in their DSP to feed PCM to the DACs.

Vince,

How can you wait so long to try this? I would have dropped everything as soon as it arrived and watched a couple movies to have a listen. You have will power that's for sure.

Hey Ron,

It ain't willpower, I assure you. Its the MIA 861 ID20 card. I've given up on aquiring it through my local dealer due to the Canadian Distributor's (Aralex) colossal ineptitude. There is light at the end of the tunnel though, M USA hooked me up with one of their biggest dealers, an installer in PA, and he is expediting one to me this week. After completely re-jigging my room as noted previously, I only want to re-configure the 861 once!

Happy Trails!
