Vince!

Did you get the player back yet? Looking forward to your review.

Its on the way Ron. Co-incident with the purchase of the new player, I've been hot-rodding my media room too. I've been rather busy this winter between looking after my new son and updating my "man cave". A fresh coat of paint in neutral shades of gray can't hurt perceived color accuracy up on the screen. I'm upgrading the separate dedicated AC lines I have for audio and video as we speak. I went with hospital grade Hubbell outlets- cryo'd versions with stainless cover plates which are rumoured to reduce rf. Hey, I'm just a tweaky audiophile at heart. eek With the assistance of the folks at Blue Jeans Cables and some 35' runs of their HDMI and Toslink, I've moved the noisy PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles into an adjacent sound proof closet. I bought a pair of Auralex Great Gramma isolators for my subs to reduce floor vibration. Finally I've eliminated all component video feeds for an all digital HDMI/DVI solution using Blue Jeans best Belden "bonded pair" HDMI cables and a Radiient HDMI switch. With a little luck and an increased application of elbow grease, I ought to have everything wrapped up when the player arrives early next week.

Happy Trails!

Vince,

I didn't notice an F80 in your son's room. It's important that you instill the love of music and all things audiophile early in life. I'm sure your wife will understand. Good shopping!

Vince,

Not good news about HDDVD these days and you haven't even listened to the 3xSPDIF mod yet. You'll get to enjoy the movies you already have but future movies will not be available. Really too bad the PS3 won the war. I really like my XA2. Well at least its the best DVD player out there. If Toshiba pulls all the players off the shelf I wonder how many new titles will still be released? I wouldn't be surprised if they cancel every one of them.

Hey Ron,

I was aware of HD-DVD's slumping fortunes when I made my purchase of the HD-XA2. The intent of this player was to fulfill two rolls in my big system. Upscaled SD-DVD playback over HDMI that was superior to my SDI'd 598DP and Iscan HD+ SDI combo along with HD-DVD playback. Between the two formats there will be plenty of media around to enjoy the player with. -Not to mention the upcoming firesale on the remaining HD-DVD inventory! There is currently no Bluray player offering comparable quality upscaled SD-DVD playback. Not only am I not regretting my purchase, I'm tremendously looking forward to the player's arrival.

When the Panny BD50 comes out and (if it) gets its first positive review, I'll purchase one and fire it off to Shawn Fogg too.

Happy Trails!

I am looking forward to the Panny review too! Glad to see you keep a positive attitude on the outcome. I have three HD movies coming in the mail from Amazon. Just shipped today!

Looking forward to your review of the mod but I will probably not bother with the upgrade until a good blu-ray player comes out.

Cheers,

Ron

That is the theory anyway, I have one on pre-order and will see what is what when it actually is released.

Throw in the Oppo 3x HDMI switcher and a UT and one would have integrated HDMI switching too.

Shawn

One problem I would guess here...

PS3 can send Max 7.1 PCM 192kHz signal through HDMI.

I have tried feeding DSP8000 with PCM 176kHz (Not MHR) signal and it's not working... I don't have 192kHz DVD-A with me so cannot try it.

So even if this can support 3 x SPDIF out, specwise would be limited at 5.1 PCM 96kHz.

Yes, you will be limited to 5.1 PCM 96kHz. We won't get 7.1 until Meridian supports HDMI (who knows when) or enables 4x coax SPDIF inputs into the G6x and 861 (which is unlikely).

We really don't need native 192kHz content*. There may be some content out there, but IMO it's not much more than a curiosity. 96kHz provides way more sampling than the human ear is capable of differentiating and also allows enough headroom to push the artifacts from brick wall digital filters beyond human hearing. We'll look back in the future and ask why 192kHz was even written into the spec.

* Meridian clearly believes there are benefits in using upsampling to 192kHz when it comes to DAC design.

Uh .. I am off-topic but I'd really like to know how to make my XE-1 region free (for DVD), I thought there wasn't a region hack available.

TIA

p.s.
Vince, I am really looking forward to reading your opinion on the performance of the modded player.

godoldog,

Did you get sorted on this? If not PM me and I can send you the relevant files.

Which you can set in the PS3 so it would downsample/downmix as needed. I have not seen anything on Bluray that outputs at 192kHz though, most material is 48kHz from what I have seen so far. I think the main thing the PS3 will spit out at higher sampling rates (if configured to) is DSD (SACD) converted to PCM and there too it can do that at 88.2kHz as well.
