Having the DACs makes it considerably easier to find the signals but technically you do not need to have the DACs. The HDMI transmitters are fed LPCM over multiple serial data links and it appears to be the same format as is fed to internal DACs in a player. The problem is simply finding those pins on the HDMI transmitters. I have the pinout for the earlier chips but not the later 100 pin (HDMI v1.2 and 1.3) chips.

The PS3 would also add the wrinkle of having no room for the board and potentially no access to the HDMI transmitter to try and find the needed pins while it is running.

Assuming the upcoming Gefen box does what it is said to do one of them modded would be a good match with a PS3, esp. if one also has an Oppo or HD-DVD player which could also be fed to the modded Gefen.

...Not too mention that there isn't a cubic centimeter of empty space inside a PS3 chassis. I'd asked Shawn that question and then did a little more research. That game console is one tightly packed bit o' engineering!

Happy Trails!

The Gefen TV Home Theater Audio Processor. It is an upcoming box with basically one HDMI input and two HDMI outputs that can take the audio on the HDMI link and spit it out on its analog outputs. The theory is one of my boards in the Gefen would be basically a universal HDMI to 3x SPDIF converter. That is the theory anyway, I have one on pre-order and will see what is what when it actually is released.

Throw in the Oppo 3x HDMI switcher and a UT and one would have integrated HDMI switching too.

Now that would be awesome! I am looking forward to what Vince thinks of his XA2 with the mode. I may want to send mine in for the upgrade. Shawn is there enough room in the XA2 to mount the boards easily? I can install electronics easy enough but if you need to make some type of a mount for it then it would be better to have you do it. Any pictures available of Vince's XA2 modified?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

There is just enough room to fit the boards in fairly easily. The coprocessor board basically sits on top of the 3x SPDIF output board and there is a space in the XA2 where that fits in.

I just put a few pictures of the install in Vince's XA2 online here:

http://switch-box.com/S_PDIF_installation/Entries/2008/2/11_Toshiba_hd-Xa2.html

As far as performing the mod itself it is pretty similar to installing an SDI output if you have ever done that. You would need very fine wire and a fine tipped soldering iron for the mod, I use 30 gauge kynar insulated wire wrapping wire and a Metcal MX-500.

Thanks,

Shawn
