Not imminent, but this is quite exciting: Secrets review of Oppo 980

Quote
The next step for Oppo is a universal HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. The impediment to this is not Oppo, but the legal barriers in place to prevent small companies from getting licenses to use the specialized chips necessary to build either a HD-DVD player or SACD player. Moves are afoot to make this licensing easier, so Oppo still may be able to get us the "everything box" that all of us want, but no one sells.
I would love a universal player that I could modify for 3x SPDIF output. I hope that Oppo don't decide to drop HD DVD support, although this would be understandable. Dare I say it, but this is what Meridian is up against. Is Oppo larger than Meridian?

So I suppose we are back where we started! Bag the player, just give us HDMI capability into 861, G68, etc.

And even then, it's not that simple.

See post in CES G Series thread. Basically beyond the new Integra, there aren't that many units that will give you what you think you should be getting

Understood! Perhaps it was you (too lazy to go check) who made the point that perhaps Meridian know more about this topic than consumers like myself who are constantly picking at them for not having their HDMI solution yet.

I guess I should just keep my big trap shut and wait for them to complete their solution. I do worry though about my 'investment' in the 800 series and its seemingly creaky status these days.
