As we say in my company, these press releases contain "weasel words". They are marketing pieces. I think we've already established that "virtually every current optical-disc audio-video and audio recording format" isn't worth the paper on which it's written.

If true, I find the absence of DVD-A support really dissappointing. Accepting that it's a dead format, what are we to do with our DVD-A collections in the long term?

I'm sure there are technical or financial reasons as to why (no doubt M got burnt as well), but, for M's next gen players not to support this legacy format is wrong from the customer p.o.v. - the same customer that took the leap of faith with M to buy into DVD-A in the first place.

Ambisonic didn't take off either but that stayed with each generation of processor.

It's a potential reason why some consumers might skip the next gen of disc spinners altogether and wait until absolutely everything can be played via a server....DVD-A included.

In six months, it will be a great time to pick up a used G91 or G98... Less is more, for want of a better phrase.

Hmm. We really need a  smiley on this forum...

Err...because people with DVD-A software will trade their players for ones that don't support the format?

I'm pretty much there now - As I'm trying to get to one spinner max.

I wonder if they will deem it illegal to rip a DVD-A disk, even when you can't play it with anything!!
I can hear it now - I'm sorry, it's still illegal to re-format a dead format... unless you're dead yourself...

With everyone moving to music servers, there is no need for a DVD-A spinner anymore, just a music server than can rip DVD-A. And I would not be surprised if you know who may just support it in multi channel form if they ever bought out a music server - I believe that MLP was the underlying format of the 880 spec.

DVD-A is dead, long live MLP.

Ian, that's really what I was getting at with my last comment. I think it's highly probably I will not buy another spinner (other than for ripping).

Assuming M will eventually put something into the server space in some shape or form, I'd hope that it did include something that could handle MLP from my DVD-A's.

There's no issue copying the encrypted contents of a DVD-A to disc. Could the USB version of the G68 then be used as a sound card in conjunction with a software DVD-A player on the PC?

Gosh, I'm sure I found something the last time I looked. Now I'm uncertain...

Yes - I thought they had removed the DVD-A support, due to the cracking incidents, but John Kotches has pointed out a couple of times that newer versions (of PowerDVD?) can play DVD-A.

Going back to USB support on new G68's, it intrigues me that it has input and output capability - I assume that this is more than simple protocol handshaking!

It is generally understood that the G68 will act as an off-board sound card for a PC, but what are the output capabilities? Will the G68 digitise its inputs and 'rip' (not a term that I particularly like) them to a PC? Maybe, there will be a standalone box or PC software package that would give music server capabilities to the G68? The G68 being the front end to a server - which of course would need some form of remote display capability.

I guess that this can be fully answered now since the product is officially released.
